Everyone: Don’t forget to fix your display name. Click your profile picture (beside the magnifying glass in the top right), go to “My Profile” and click “Edit” beside your name to change it to what you want. I wrote feedback complaining about them not getting those copied over, but they may be very busy right now.

The “Two-Panel Strip” has become more and more common in recent months.

Does Honeymoon look a little bit younger today?

S’Funny, the new site doesn’t seem to freeze up my ’puter as much as the old one.

Tips for the New GoComics:

Navigation Tip: Instead of right clicking the strip title and opening in a new tab|window as we use to do, right click on the speech balloon and open in a new tab|window. This way you won’t have to reload your comic page when you want to go to another comic.

Screen Name/Avatar: Click on your Avatar (top of the screen to the right of SHOP) and select MY PROFILE and click EDIT. Then you change your display name and/or update your avatar. Note: Your display name will appear in all caps regardless of how you enter it.

Editing a comment: Until you refresh the page pressing Ctrl + Z in the comment box will re-display your comment so you can edit it and then repost it (then you can delete the previous one). Note this does not work when using Reply.

Creating a Blank Line: Type Enter Enter   Enter Enter (  stands for non breaking space)

I find the “replies” disconcerting. Why don’t they just appear without having to click a button? It’s too easy to miss them this way….

As do I !   Despite what Neil disagrees about my saying that this place needs two set ups, I maintain that it DOES !

One that the portables can go to that provides minimal data usage and one that home units, that have more latitude with the bits and Bytes, where the lost features can sing and dance and play ! (Smiley image)

Once I figured out where to click to get signed in and my comics in a strip along the top, I updated my bookmark to that page. [Firefox on a Mac]

If that bookmark still works right later today then I will delete the old bookmark.

Just using a double enter is giving me paragraph breaks without needing the nbsp bit.

What happened to Nine Chickweed…

Go to the comics A-Z list, the circle at the bottom marked “U-#”. Open that and you get The U to # strips. Scroll down through the letters until you get to the # ones and the last one is Nine Chickweed.

To add a comic to your My comic list go to the upper left of the comic where you will see a circle with a plus + symbol. Click that and it will become a minus - symbol. That means your comic has been added to your list. I had to do that for every thing I read and even added a few. When I click My Comics I get a page with all my stuff in what appears to be reverse order of having added them in as I went down through the alphabet.

I right click and open each one in a new tab as I do not see provision for them being in a horizontal row as the non Pro ones had been. Separate tabbing eliminates the need for constant back clicking to get back to the list. Still cumbersome but slightly okay. Hopefully things will get better in time ?

Thanks, Gweed…I did happen to find it a moment later. But I also didn’t notice that it had changed my handle. Got THAT one figured out pretty quick. Buy I doubt very much that they can do anything, short of reverting to the old format, to rescue this. It now takes far too many steps just to get to where you can read the comments.

Sorry, fellows, I’m outta here. I don’t need this frustration at this point in my life. Maybe I’ll check in in about a month or so and see if there’s any improvement.

Hmm … not sure how to save each day’s strip to my HD.

Also, the round icons are cute, but they cut off a lot of a square image.

Wonders if gifs will animate in this format, is too lazy to swap out avatars to find out.

The new layout is going to take a lot of getting used to, but at least the Dick Tracy crew is still chugging along.

I like that the comics show up a bit larger as you land on the page, but I agree this new layout will take some getting used to

How to save a copy of the strip

View the page source. Right click on the page and select View page source or from your browser’s menu. The exact term used varies depending on the browser.

Search for item-comic-image. In windows, Ctrl-F will open the browser’s search function. There is only one instance of that tag and the value of src will be a hyperlinked URL. That is the URL of the day’s strip. Click on the URL to open it. If by chance the URL is not hyperlinked, copy the URL to the address bar.

The image shown using the URL can be saved to your hard disk or to an image host.

When I went here I can see my avatar at the top right corner but I still need to sign in to post a comment. If I see my avatar that means I am logged in. They seem to have forgotten how to properly use a cookie.

Can’t GoComics have a version of the site for mobile devices and another for desktop devices like most other sites do?

And they call this an upgrade? This is an awful upgrade. They should revert this version to beta testing and give us the old setuo. Whoever thought of this should be nominated as addition to Bribery’s collection.

I don’t like the “updated” Sammy. I know he was a “Sambo” in original Spirit but they could have kept him Black instead of trying to be “politically correct”.

GoComics offers a threaded view of comments but it is limited to one level deep. It does not allow reply to a reply. The people who did this upgrade seems to be underpaid as their product are lackluster, and I am being polite at that

If this escalates, Sammy may want to be wearing a grounding wire…

I wonder if Honeymoon’s question will transition into an origin recap for ‘The Spirit.’

You’d think there would be some simple hypertextural algorithm to auto-size picture embeds within the comments, so all we’d need to do would be to paste in the image location. :(

With the advent of this new format, GoComics No Longer Apologizes For Defending Us Against What They’d Labelled As ‘Spam.’

First: Label something as a nuisance, even if it isn’t.

Second: Ban it.

Third: Past a certain point, Never Speak Of It Again.

Did it really exist?

Tough to tell, without fully vetting the sources.

Many stations produced material which was little heard outside of its own broadcast range, so it’s certainly possible. Radio production was relatively inexpensive. There might not even have been a licensing fee associated with the material, as it would have constituted free advertising for the strip.

Still a little skeptical, but it’s fun to think about.

Doing a little additional sleuthing …

According to wikipedia, Radio station WHAT-AM, mentioned in the above, does indeed exist, and was owned by the publisher of “The Philadelphia Record” from July 1940 through February 1944, pumping out a massive 100 Watt broadcast signal.

At least the people in the building could probably receive it, if the walls weren’t excessively thick.

I’d include their logo, but – y’know – ‘Spam’ and all that.

Researching radio shows is a pain.

Case In Point …

I’ve vivid memories of a lavishly produced “Sherlock Holmes” radio series which aired Sundays on WGBH-FM in – I’d guess – The mid-70’s, but to this day I’ve been unable to produce any evidence of its existence.

Suppose I could try going through newspaper files at the Boston Public library in search of radio listings from that period – There were such things at the time, near or adjacent to the comics section, actually – but that would require legwork.

Instead of doing replies that make people have to do the extra clicking I will simply copy what I am responding to. If you do the Reply to someone’s comment hours after it was posted the chance that it will get seen diminishes.

I was finally able to log in. I kept getting error 500 messages up until now. This new system sucks.

I always leave certain strips tabs open, which includes D.T. and so had no trouble getting on.

Wouldn’t it have been more nearly reasonable for Sammy to ask “What are you?” After all, he’s probably never seen a kid with antennae before.

Thanks to everyone who tried to aim me towards that ’70’s-era SHERLOCK HOLMES radio show, even if it still remains elusive.

I remember quite distinctly that the actor playing Dr. Watson announced the end credits over some spirited orchestral music, always ending with, “And my friend, _______, played Sherlock Holmes,” or words to that effect.

Can’t for the life of me recall the actor’s name, which would be a huge assist in searching. :(

Possibly.

The end credits music rings a definite bell, though the voice-over doesn’t sync up at all. Neither actor’s name elicits a “Eureka!” moment from me.

Still, it’s possible the credits might have been re-recorded for broadcast outside of the U.K.

Honeymoon has clearly aced Sammy. If he is at all smart, he will acknowledge her leadership on this, her home turf. She has still-developing latent lunarian powers that could be brought forward if things get rough….

One feature of the “new” format is that if someone doesn’t like your opinion about something, you get erased! And you don’t know who dropped the dime on you. Appropo!
