Not only does Gayle have a red sweater, but it appears that Gayle also changed into gray pants to match the belt, and switched yesterday’s purple hair bow to a red one to match the sweater for today. Aside from the clothing change, it looks like Gayle has shrunk. She used to be about a head taller than 11-year-old Michael, but now Michael is taller than she is and she is 14 years old. When my daughter was 14 years old, she was at her adult height.

At this point in 1988, Lynn Johnston was getting ready to reintroduce romance back into Michael’s life for the first time after the departure of his prior girlfriend, Deanna Sobinski. We can see that with Gayle we have not only a girl who is mom-approved by Elly, but she also likes wearing Michael’s mother’s clothes. That’s a little too Oedipal for me. Fortunately Lynn Johnston changed her mind about Gayle as a girlfriend. Michael’s next girlfriend is his same age and Elly is not quite as fond of her as she is of Gayle.

@QUACKER AND HOW: Clearly, Mike isn’t following your Oedipal pattern. He isn’t killing his father to marry his mother; he’s dissing his mother by saying that his newest girl friend looks better wearing his mother’s sweater than his mother does.

Clothes may make the man, but in this case the girl makes the clothes.

Elly should be pleased. Her feminine instincts have had the desired effect. :o)

Odd that Elly had a red sweater. I don’t think I’ve ever see her or Elizabeth in any thing but purple or lilac.

Perpetuating the lie that a woman feels good as long as she looks good.
