Never saw the show. So there’s more beeps than calling a simple phone number would need. Are the viewers doing some sort of rating on what they saw? How does this work?
I believe voters phoned in for their favorites to advance. I thought I read that, at the height of its popularity, a show would get more U.S. citizens voting than in most national elections.

I remember when TV signals were wireless and telephone signals came through a cable in the wall.
