Since age 17, newly enlisted in the Air Force(1968) everyone living in the barracks put our boots on outside, kept the floors cleaners and easier to clean. We have some shelves for shoes and a chair to sit in just inside the every door. Keeps the floor very clean. Lived in Japan, married to a Japanese lady for 45 years now. Raised 4 kids. Their families all do the same, take off your shoes as soon as you enter the house. Then put on slippers.
