I am in total agreement with Calvin – “Cows, not Condos” was a theme used by a suburban mayoral candidate near me. His town was burgeoning with uncontrolled growth.
We are seeing many animals invading the suburban areas taken over by humans because they literally have no place else to go. Coyotes, bears, deer, etc.
I’m pretty sure this actually happens sometimes, like a housing development breaks ground and they start building houses, but then they run out of money or the land isn’t desirable or some highway they were counting on doesn’t get made, and the abandoned land eventually becomes wild growth again.
A friend of mine got into a dump truck and put the thing in neutral. That was the early ‘60s when the farm at the end of our street was sold for development. When my parents moved to the neighbourhood, our house was two away from the edge of town. Now it’s about a quarter mile from the edge of town. Alas, all the farms beyond the railroad tracks now are covered in ugly plastic-coated cardboard suburbia. To see real farmland one has to go west about two miles. To the east there is no farmland anymore.

Thanks to serendipity (and a cautious construction worker), Calvin and Hobbes didn’t become eco terrorists.

Where I live, the deer wait around for the apple they know I’ll give them. I suppose I shouldn’t feed them these treats, but it feels good.

Whether he realizes it or not, Calvin is beginning to gain awareness of events that involve more than just himself.

An excellent, and very important, thread. Even Calvin, and Hobbes, know we only have one planet.
