Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for February 10, 2017
Transcript:
Arlo: Millions of containers come into this country every year, filled with goods made in other countries. Arlo: Very few of the empty containers are used to export our products to the rest of the world. Arlo: The container excess is problematic and expensive for shippers, so why not recycle them? Arlo: Besides, there's a symmetry there if you think about it.

I don’t see it being that big a problem. Seems self-contained to me.

We could fill them with goods and send them back….We must have something somebody somewhere needs…

I’m not sure I understand the point. Maybe it’s that all the inflowing goods mean outflowing money, and the decreased wealth in the US makes tiny housing more appealing?

Can we get a double wide?

If Janis is so keen on this, she could try living on Arlo’s boat that he bought from Gus.

The last time I saw someone living in a shipping container, it was a bunch of illegal immigrants on an episode of “Law & Order.”

Containers run for $6K give or take, a lot of work to bring up to housing standards

I have given this a lot of thought.
You don’t have to make tiny houses with used containers.
You can use multiple containers in multiple configuration to make your home.

You can create any design you desire with as many containers as are required… there are many options, all you need is some imagination. The outside may seem a bit utilitarian but the inside can be as beautiful as any million dollar home, for a fraction of the cost. And with a little paint and some effort you can make the exterior a lot nicer too. And the cherry on top is recycling something ugly that takes up valuable real estate into something that can become valuable real estate.
.
And this is hardly unique to container homes. When I lived in Italy I was frequently surprised by the beauty found inside a home that looked like a worn out cement box on the outside. Think outside the box to make inside the box something special.

Actually, very few of the empty containers are NOT used to export our products to the rest of the world. We do have a trade deficit, but it’s far less than you imagine.

Tornadoes can make real sport of how far they can throw them, too.

As others have pointed out America doesn’t have a big problem with containers stacking up because we do export many things, food foremost, but if you visit some of the island nations like Martinique, you do see that problem as they don’t have an industrial or farming base that will use them.

Many containers go back to China filled with scrap metal and waste paper, our leading exports to China. Keep those recycling bins full folks, it’s the only thing China buys from us.

One of our British Columbia neighbours has a very lovely container home. At least a dozen units.
