That is a funny kind of math lesson if either of them thinks that 78 + 32 = 100.

Hey, hasn’t he been taught to always give 110%?

I think her comment is right on course, with a Venn thing in the middle. 78%, not bother to read, 32%, Bad at math, the 10% in the middle don’t bother to read or know math. Those are the ones who make up their own statistics and fail to graduate. (I am sure the FTC (Failure To Complete) rate is a lot higher, but this is Frazz’s school, thus the 10% fail rate.

I’m not sure what to make of this. I guess I’m supposed to think she’s stupid for doing the subtraction wrong, but the point she made is absolutely right.

Maybe I am being paranoid, but is Varnes gone?

i would love to hear Ms Olsen’s take on sex ed…..I might learn something!

No need for a “funny math lesson” when a person makes a simple mistake. I am sure Mrs. Olsen took it in stride, even if Caulfield decided to draw particular attention to the “grievous” error on her part. As a teacher (professor) I, like all teachers, have to develop a thick enough skin to get past the inevitable slip up that occurs to all of us occasionally…. much to the bemusement of some of the class.

I do find it pretty cool, if a little freaky, to talk to people I don’t really know at all, and can only glean what they are like and how they think…But we do have one thing in common….Comics….Not to mention most of us have a silly streak….Hi Y’alll!

One of the things I was trained to do when teaching children is to make intentional mistakes for the kids to catch. They love being able to “call out” the teacher, and it helps cement the concepts for them.

Not that I think that’s what Mrs. Olsen was doing here… I’m pretty sure she just had a little slip-up.

I could see this a Venn diagram thing for the 10% who know how to spell but don’t bother to learn to read them. Either via mis-pronunciation or just a lack of desire to read them, or those gifted enough to not “bother” because they love it so much, shout out to Gracie at Baldo.

I think that she was distracted by copying from a paper to the board and thought, “70 from 100 is 30, and 8 from 10 is 2, so the remainder is 32.”

I wonder how many real Caulfields wonder if they need to be educated as a growing minority of educated people and that most of their peers are not bothering to learn more than they think they need and no more?

Why bother with math and reading? Our president obviously understands neither.
