We use the US mail to pay bills; we mail checks instead of using our credit cards online. Also, we mail birthday and Christmas cards; we’re just not lazy enough to send “e-cards.”

    Long live the Postal Service!

Don’t worry! Direct mail is alive and well and growing! And that, after all, is what pays your salaries, postal workers!

Snail mail is a lot more secure than E-mail. That is the reason why the Russian military went back to hand typed and hand delivered messages for there really important info. They bought thousands of old school typewriters years ago.

I’d send some but the slot on my apartment complex’s mailboxes says ‘outgoing mail’ and my mail is totally introverted…

I post my snail mail at the post office. I live in a small town and it’s on the way to work. I hear there are idiots who put trash in corner mailboxes

Why is “Mr. Mailbox” referred to as a she? Does “he” identify as a fe-mailbox?

I live on a hill that isn’t serviced by the PO, so they provide me with a no cost PO box in town. My daily ritual is a drive into town to get the mail, send out packages, run errands, visit friends. I use email and texting, but I still enjoy sending and receiving letters. And, what a bargain! For less than 50 cents I can have a letter delivered anywhere in the country! As the other commenter said, “Long live the USPS!” Also, as you probably know, the USPS is self-supporting. No tax bucks at work here.

And still my Mom says, “You never write….”

Simply because the medium is different doesn’t necessarily mean the content is any lesser of quality and composition than that of a “letter.”

We pay almost all our bills on line, most are automatic payment, on the rare occasion that we do need to mail something it has gotten to the point where it usually gets forgotten for a few days. It doesn’t help that they have removed most of the mailboxes and our local post office is a nightmare, plus the post office has lost three packages on us in the past year, Fed Ex and UPS have lost none.

I concur with those who uphold the USPS. I pay bills, make contributions, or make purchases by check only (other than in store by cash). There is no such thing as a “secure” website! How many stories of hacking into so-called secured business or government servers does one have to read to get the idea? How many cases of identity theft does it take?

    Hmm, I don’t know.

Hundreds of letters are still being sent every day.

Just as a word of caution, avoid using those drive-up mail boxes that have the long slot for depositing your mail. I dropped off some bill payments in one of those, and a couple of them got stolen. The thieves took the checks and did a pretty good forgery job on them. One check was cashed for $750 and they tried to cash the other one for $1500. Luckily the bank teller got suspicious and called us before cashing the check. We ended up having to close that account and open a new one. From now on, whenever I need to mail something, I go into the post office itself and deposit the mail there.
