I always love the strips in which Petey plays the oboe. I could not make one so much as scream for help. The double reeds have the reputation, richly deserved, of being the most difficult instruments to learn to play. But I love his indomitable spirit about the oboe. He wants to learn it, and that’s 80% of the battle. He practices faithfully and diligently. He studies and learns. One day, Petey might have turned into a fine oboist.

I can hardly imagine that contraption of Alice’s in an orchestra at Carnegie Hall.

The Sound Effects are magnificent, or anyway magnificently cacophonous!
Alice means well, in her self-centered way, but Petey is trying for Serious Practice on his oboe, not just playing around.
Can your Crank ‘n’ Play play Serious Music, Alice?

Petey channels his inner Eric Dolphy.
