Hey, I’m a hair stylist, and I’ve sold dog products.
“Harsh” soaps and shampoos, like old fashioned bar soap, are more alkaline than “pH balanced” modern soaps and shampoos for humans.
They clean our skin too well, strip away all the oils, and can leave a film.
A better shampoo for us is more acidic (ie has a lower pH), to maintain our so called “acid mantle”, which supports our particular “good bacteria”, and helps protect us from germs and chemicals that affect human skin.
Dog’s have more alkaline skin than we do.
So pH balanced dog shampoo is a little harsh when used on humans… may cause skin and scalp flaking, and frizz or dull your hair, and ruin a nice soft modern permanent.
Like using a bar of laundry soap.
But it’s safer than putting modern human shampoo on your dog…
Their skin is thinner than ours, but naturally more resistant to harsh environments.
Acidity can cause a mild chemical burn that erodes it, and allows invading bacteria to cause itching and irritation.
So there you go, Opal. Use Roscoe’s shampoo, if you don’t mind dull skin and a frizzy perm.

This seems backwards. It sounds like something Earl would do.

I hope using the dog shampoo was temporary until Opal buys more body wash.

But DON’T use your next body wash on Roscoe.

Bar soap is ALSO detergent; unless you buy “home-made” soap.
