Besides hosting a monster movie show, Svengoolie also hosts a Three Stooges show on a Chicago TV station. I can’t help thinking that the Margies remind me of the Three Stooges somehow. Does anyone else get that vibe? Anyway, if that is true, Little Margie would be Curly, with an ironic nickname and she strikes me as not too bright. Big Margie would be like Larry. I think he was always in charge.
“Here’s the exciting news regarding me showing up in your newspaper- no, not in the police blotter, but in an iconic police–based entry on the funny pages! I’m very honored to be included in an upcoming story arc in the long-running “Dick Tracy” comic strip! In an adventure that begins around April 11th- you’ll see me in several of the daily strips- AND- in living (or as close as I get to living ) color in a couple of the Sunday comic strips as the tale moves from April into May! This is just an amazing event for me- having been a longtime fan of Dick Tracy, even having drawn my own parodies of the strip ( and parodied it on TV as well)! I’m grateful to writer Mike Curtis, artists Shelley Pleger and Joe Staton, and colorist Shane Fisher for giving me a tiny part in the legendary saga of Dick Tracy! " -Svengoolie
So nice to see one of my TV favorites, Svengoolie (Rich Koz), making a guest appearance here in the Tracyville CosUCon. It’s not a new role for him; he has frequently served as a cosplay competition judge at comics conventions. In this video, Sven meets some cosplayers and others at C2E2 2015: http://tinyurl.com/m5g5dzw ; and here in 2012 he deals with zombies in Elgin (not Berwyn!) and judges the costume contest: http://tinyurl.com/n7ly85e ; and finally a forthcoming costume event at Chicago Horror Con Flashback Weekend (next 5 August, the 12th Annual Sinister Visions Costume Contest): http://tinyurl.com/kjj6nl3 .
They aren’t the Three Bears, but the Three Margies may be in for parallel trouble…
I don’t know why, but when I grew up in Chicago, when I first saw Svengoolie, late 1960s up to 1972 (when I joined the air force and moved away), I thought Svengoolie was played by Jerry G. Bishop – formerly a radio host at either WLS (then a top 40 station) or WCFL (also top 40 but now defunct). In his first gigs (gags?), he didn’t even appear. And when he finally did appear, it was always still photographs.
Well do I remember the Berwyn jokes, with the men’s chorus always going “dah dah dah-dah, dah dah dah” every time someone mentioned the name. Berwyn is a suburb of Chicago.
I seem to also remember Svengoolie getting involved with something else – perhaps a pledge drive on WTTW – where he was encouraging viewers to call in and pledge. It was then that I first saw him “live” – and in an accidental shot of him, it was revealed that he was wearing shorts and flip-flops. It was hot in that call center, he said.
Well do I remember his tag lines, which began “Brush your fangs and comb your face!” Later, he satirized himself by saying “Brush your face and comb your fangs!” Ah, those were the days. “Time for horrible movies, with me! Svengoolie!”
Never saw the man, although I’m sure he’s good at what he does. But growing up near Pittsburgh, we had a weatherman/game and dance and movie show host named Bill Cardille, who passed away last year. For over 20 years, “Chilly Billy” Cardille hosted Chiller Theater, the Saturday Late Show horror movie series of NBC affiliate WIIC/WPXI. So popular was the show that it kept NBC’s Saturday Night Live off of the affiliate in that time slot for four years, until the network brought pressure on the station which moved Chiller to 1 a.m., then to 2 a.m., cutting it from a double-feature to one film. For more information, search for the Chiller Theater Memories web site.
In New Orleans, we had Morgus the Magnificent https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgus_the_Magnificent
A credit missing from the Wikipedia article was when circa 1971, Morgus hosted Saturday afternoon reruns of a science-fiction TV show named “Star Trek” or something like that. The show was very popular, undoubtedly because of Morgus! (Whatever happened to that “Star Trek” show anyway? LOL)
We had “Weird Theater” on late Saturday early Sunday on KTRK 13, the Black Cat station. No host, but a great opening with Seymour’s flying saucer from a kiddy morning show that first had Cadet Don then Cadet Don Davis and his side kick a puppet alien in a saucer ship flying by and great mood music. At least three movies into the early moring. I would watch the sun rise then and I was rather young too.
Anyone remember Seymour’s Fright Night? It was on Los Angeles channel 9 KHJ-TV in the early 70s. Elvira was probably inspired by his shtick which was heckling fans and lambasting the horrible movies he played.
As a kid, we had shows coming out of Chicago, Peoria(IL.) and the Quad Cities(Iowa) such as “Screaming Yellow Theater”(Svengoolie) and Chuck Acri’s “The Acri Creature Feature”. Great times on a Saturday night.
I like Shelley Pleger’s work today very much. Middle Margie’s arm is raised at an angle that carries the eye to the diagonal line above Big Margie, who peeks over the top of her screen. Her eyes are on Middle Margie, while Svengoolie leans in toward the middle panel. Very effective and well done. Looking forward to the cosplay fun…and inevitable crime.

If people weren’t confused already, I imagine that Svengoolie should do the trick.

It’s not unusual for the larger conventions to have a celebrity M.C. work their Masquerade/Cosplay Contest.
‘Star Wars’ actor Anthony Daniels performed just such duties for Atlanta’s ‘Dragon Con’ more than once.

Will this be the “FINAL” return of Abner Kadaver? He did start out as a horror movie host. By the way, GREAT rendition of the very real Svengoolie!

Svengoolie plugged ‘Dick Tracy’ on his site, under the ‘Appearances’ link.
Let’s keep an eye on the ‘GoComics’ subscription numbers and see if they tick up at all.

Assuming for a moment that the ‘Margies’ are indeed sisters, I’d guess that their nicknames are based on ‘Birth Order’ rather than relative size.

I am not a fan of Svengoolie. I grew up watching The Ghoul and Elvira, and Svengoolie doesn’t hold a candle to either of them, IMHO.
