Actually, many inventions were made by brilliant people who wanted to avoid work, so they invented something to do some parts of their work for them. Also it helps to be atleast a little crazy to believe in your own invention.
@Rags Yes, there have been at least two dummy passengers in our local paper alone, although one was recent (in the last year), there other was some time ago.
New York City? In NYC gypsy cabbies (those w/o taxi medallions) have their passengers sit up front, in order to deceive police and escape possibly getting stopped for illegal operation of a business.
