I remember when the price of sugar was going up in the 1970’s. Chocolate candy bars were a nickle then – to keep the price down, they started shrinking the size of the bars until they contained about as much chocolate as a single M&M.

The same thing is happening with coffee in this millennia have you noticed how small and expensive the $6, 3-lb can of coffee has become? It’s Columbia’s biggest selling drug.
Reducing the volume of product without changing the price has been an industry ‘gold standard’ for decades, and it covers almost every known product. Same for loading that ‘short count’ with cheaper grades of ingredients. ‘Original’ no longer means ‘Original’ for ingredients, just for the bag design and logo.
‘But we do it all for you, the customer. Trust us.’
When the cost of an ingredient goes up [bad crop, bad weather, etc] it’s an excuse to shrink a product and/or raise the price. But then it never goes down again. Also when the cost of sugar increased, they upped the price on diet pop too!

Easily done by reducing the amount of chips. And probably raising the price at the same time.

The air in the bag is intended to keep the chips from getting crushed to greasy dust during packing and shipping.

Theoretically, the air is to cushion the chips so they don’t break up in transit.
