I agree with both @david obrien and @paullp. It’s a cave man gag which would be perfectly logical if cavemen actually had a sense of both humor and the future. Who knows? Maybe they did.
Maybe their Paleolithic ancestors planted false evidence for the Neolithic archæologists. The problem with pranking the future is that you’ll never see them fall for it.
