I’m pretty sure the signs I’ve seen say “leave a penny, take a penny”. Maybe it’s a regional thing. But the idea is to drop your “spare” pennies in there for someone else to use in making exact change. That’s still common cents, I guess.
If logic and rationality ruled in America, we’d do away with pennies, replace dollar bills with dollar coins, eliminate that idiotic 9/10 of a cent on gasoline prices, adopted the metric system, abandon daylight-saving time, and let the IRS calculate our income taxes for us. Congress could do all of that, you know, if they gave two hoots in hell about progress. But if “pro” is the opposite of “con”, what do you suppose is the opposite of “progress”?
