And so I made my plan. I reasoned that there must be greater settlements and more life downhill, toward whatever body accepted the effluvium and waste of the river. I was uncertain what direction that was. I could not recall ever having seen the sun, just a general brightening of the haze that did not allow for clean shadows and gave no indicaton of where the Sun might rise or set. There were plenty of boats and barges available at the riverside docks, and many of them abandoned, along with the warehouses that once served them. I chose a suitable vessel and collected provisions for a journey of indefinite length and unlikely return. Then, the night came that I cast off.
