When I was a kid I sometimes listened to Grand Central Station and The Shadow if my parents were out in the evening; we only had the radio in the kitchen -no TV (if you kids can believe it). We got a TV in the late 50s when I was in HS and I watched LS Hit Parade and the Pope Cooking School. Now I watch Mad Men and Top Chef and other cooking shows.
