I like country music too, but I don’t listen to it on my radio. I do either alternative rock or classical music.

A couple of comments on this one:

    1. Go back to camp Michael and let your father listen to his music in peace!

    2. So Michael’s Pop and John’s Country music have essentially the same lyrics. I disagree. The subject matter of those genres of music are very different from each other.

    3. I like the way Mike calls it “country western.”

    4. CKAT 600 AM is a real country music station local to where Lynn Johnston lived in North Bay, Ontario that she is calling out.

    5. The real life John Patterson, Rod Johnston, was the all night disc jockey at a radio station (CKDM) in Dauphin, Manitoba in his years before becoming a dentist.

What passes as Country nowadays comes off as watered-down Rock. If I’m listening to Country my tastes range back to Patsy Cline and some of that ‘60s stuff. OTOH, I’ll preferably be listening to Bach, Beethoven, Debussy and Ravel. Uh, can’t forget Chopin!

Music is in the ear of the beholder. I like classic country and pop/rock from the 60’s to the 90’s.

Today’s Country music is just so depressing. I mean, do you know what happens when you play a modern Country song backwards? You get your truck back, you get your wife back, you get your job back, and your dog comes home.

    Lynn’s Notes:

I had a lot of fun making up funny lyrics to these imaginary tunes…but readers focused on their objection to the word “crud”. Today, this word would be conservative. How times have changed.

In my younger years, the radio commercials were: DO YOU HAVE PIMPLES???

Today the commercials are: DO YOU HAVE TROUBLE GOING TO THE BATHROOM? AND GUYS, LET’S FACE IT, ARE YOU NOT WHAT YOU WERE IN THE BEDROOM?

I try not to be a music snob. All genres have there merits. It’s tough though.

Popular music today is based on a formula that sells. Which is why it all sounds the same. And looks the same. The little bit of American innovation and creativity that remains gets in the way of profit.

I always wanted to play in a New Age Country Western Band. I was going to call it: Tex Vortex & The Cosmic Cowboys !
