There ought to be a law that a city should take its water downstream from where it discharges its sewerage. That would do more to clean up the water supply than any other government regulation.
Me and my buddies were filling our canteens from the Colorado river when a park ranger informed us we were just downstream of the bridge where the mule trains cross. As it was 100+ degrees, we drank it anyway.
In Florida, the politicians love the idea of injection wells. I just see it as a pipe in the form of a long “U”, with the toilet at the downflowing part of it, and the water faucet at the rising end.
I read that Quincy, Ill in the early years took water directly out of the Mississippi River. But as the river became more polluted, and even the horses wouldn’t drink it, it was decided to put in a water treatment plant.
It’s possibly worse than that. One of the pieces I read about dinosaurs is that they may have had a waste system much like that of birds. IOW both waste sources are expelled together.

I drink when I’m thirsty, I drink when I’m dry, if the pee doesn’t get me, I surely won’t die.

The big question: downstream or upstream?

We are always downstream from something.

DANFLAK, during the American Civil War a guide printed by the Union suggested “coffee will taste better is the kitchen is upstream from the latrine”.

Leak into the aquifer? That could never happen!
