Oh, come on, old man, big hat, ravens? Gotta be Odin. The bag is a bag of holding, gods I wanted one at Comic Con. The kids, nosy little brats that should be eaten by the dragon that lives in the bag of holding.
Comics were never like this when I was growing up but I used to make up my own stories when playing – and resting. But then I always did have a technicolor imagination. Anyway, carry on Mr. Wiley. May you inspire today’s children to think outside of an electronic board!
Look, it’s Old Man Wiley, the children exclaim. Let’s follow him.You can tell it’s him because he is hunched over and his fingers are stubs now because of the drawing he’s been doing. Danae has been bothering him again because she’s not the star of the strip. The Wiley Bears have been giving her some competition. So Old Man Wiley has run away to rest for a while. What do you think he has in the sack, the boy says.I don’t know but I think we better find out, says the girl. They peer into the sack, the girl screams, the boy falls to the ground shaking violently as if he’s having a seizure. The girl says it’s a new strip, new characters, new story lines. She says, Danae will surely kill Old Man Wiley. We must take this script and never, ever let it see the light of day.The children take the script and run deep into the woods and bury it where it will never be found.Old Man Wiley giggles and snorts under his breath. My mission is complete and now I can sleep for twenty years like the other old man.
I write three stories a week. I can take time out to write this very short story too:
Old Saxocob has been working for hundreds of years on this. Now it was time to get the final ingredient and it is only on Midgard—-Earth. With it he will be the lead in all things in transformative life magick. The one crucial part exists only on Midgard, out of all the multiple universes it is only here. But now he is so very tired. After what he had to go through in the land of flesh eating centaurs and colorful fairy-birds he had to rest his weary bones. That tree looks as good as any. He sat down heavily then leaned back to support his back against the not too rough trunk and sighed.
Almost immediately he was sleeping, his grip on the bag was weak. He was so sound asleep he did not hear the creeping of two Earth beings—children, a boy and a girl the same age, paternal twins. Their big eyes were only on the magenta bag and the girl reached out a small smooth hand and grabbed it quick. They walked away a short distance and opened it up. There is a golden glow that shocked and surprised them. The sight was so breath taking. Inside was a whole world of color and strange beautiful shapes they had never seen before. They looked in deeper and vanished. The bag took itself like a slithering snake back to its master who will sleep for a few hours. It will be much longer till he finds out the bag has two new occupants. The children will have an adventure no one will believe and they will recall it clearly into their 80’s.
Old man Forbearance is running out of steam.Jackdaws Complacency and Self-satisfaction espy with curious interest from above.Siblings Temperance and Tolerance look to see what Forbearance prizes, and are nearly blinded by the wealth of fortitude that keeps the old man along his path.
Kids: “Oh awesome, Granpa’s got a sack of cookies!! Let’s get them before he does!” (after they peer in the bag): “Oh, NOOOOOO!!! We are too late, he already ate them all!”
Actually, I write stories on my blog and many of them are image inspired flash fiction. Today, I’m planning on writing the next chapter in a child’s fantasy series I specifically created for my grandson. He, his friend, who is a dragon, and a 21st century sorceress from China have been mysteriously transported back in time to Bronze Age China to solve a mystery. I can’t wait to finish it so I can read it to him.
The thief has dragged his swag bag as far as he can in hopes of avoiding detection and pursuit. Weakened by his heroin habit, he slumps against a convenient tree and zonks into oblivion. The children of the woodcutter, Handsome and Grendel, wait until his ragged breathing evens out before slipping the sack of stolen goods from his insensible fingers. Anticipating a chance for great wealth, they open the sack and are bathed in a golden glow. Suddenly John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson step out from behind a tree and blow them away for having stolen Marcellius’s glow-y stuff.
The traveler was tired. Tired of walking. Tired of begging. Tired of searching. His old joints creaked and ached. Everything was bone weary and sore. Even his ear lobes were screaming in pain. Just a little sit down. For a moment. To rest. Let the racing thoughts that jump and jostle demanding attention to settle and quiet. He slowly nodded off on that oh so soft mossy seat while Heckle and Jeckle told him tall tales and old jokes from the tree branches.
The children had followed the old gent from town. The baker who had chased them out of his shop, moments later had given the tattered old man a loaf of bread and a dinner sized wedge of cheese and small skin of wine. What made that old guy so special? He doesn’t live in town. He’s a stranger. In a town where just last month stones were thrown, chasing that stranger out of town. The children had taken part, along with most others. But not the baker. Nor the butcher or a few others. So what made this old man special?
Perhaps it’s in his rucksack the girl whispered to the boy. Her hand sneaking in around the tree and snatching that curiously coloured sack. The two ran behind a nearby tree. Nimble fingers quickly undoing the knot. But as if the sack did not want to give up its secrets, it took both of them to pull, tug, and stretch it open. To look deep into the sack, their faces bathed in a golden light. And slowly they began to smile. Larger and larger were their grins. Then a small chuckle. It grew. To giggles. Then laughs. And finally full out rolling on the ground belly aching guffaws. The children left the sack and sleeping begger as they laughing chased each other home.
The old gent woke to the sounds of Heckle and Jeckle laughing at the retreating children. He retrieved his rucksack, smiling at the memory of another child from the beginning of history. One whose tears he had dried. And had whispered hope is a very good thing to save. Asis a rucksack filled with laughter and joy.
The wizard sighed… the task assigned to him by the Supremacy was complete. But the bag was so heavy, he needed to rest for a moment. It was all right. After all, it could only be undone by a young boy and girl working together, and where would you find a young boy and girl in this land of spells and curses?
The man and woman realize too late the mistake of taking the old man’s bag. They now know the burden the old man has endured is now theirs to bear, as the old man is no where to be seen. He has finally been relieved of the burden he’s borne for so long…
Two crows happen upon an old wizard struggling along in the forest with a large red sack. They then noticed a young boy and young girl spying on the old wizard. The wizard exhausted slowly sat down beneath a large tree, setting the sack on the ground next to him. The crows thought, "Maybe he will die soon, so we can feast on his dead rotting carcass. They then noticed the children snooping inside the wizard’s sack. Out of the sack came a blinding light that killed the children. The crows though, “Wow! We hit the jackpot! Let’s leave out the sack again for some unsuspecting fool to pick up again!”
And the two crows and their friend feasted on the carcasses of those stupid enough to pick up the sack. And they and there kind lived happily ever after.
And the moral of the story: Be wary of sacks left by crows!

I went for a walk in the trees
But something went wrong with my knees.
I had to sit down
In my new purple gown
And soon I was giving off ZZZZZZ.

Along came some kids with a knack
For taking a look in my sack
They opened it wide
And then peered down inside
What they saw had them taken aback!

As you hoped, he had found lost imagination, dropped there next to the tree’s roots by a five-year old somewhere shortly after 1982.
