Howtheduck, sorry, but you’re misreading it. In panel 2, where John’s balloon is voluminous, Lizzie has a smile on her face. In panel 3 she starts pulling at her hat or the back of her dress (while mom is talking), and in panel 4 she is pulling on her sleeve.
Since most moms are working today, very few have the time or have learned the skills to sew. The same can be said for the dads. Most of them can’t saw a piece of wood without cutting themselves.
My dad made my wooden staff for me. (And stilts. I loved those stilts!) I didn’t have a sheep, tho. My Beagle covered in fake fleece would have been good to go, I think.
It’s a cute outfit (love that little sheep under her arm!) but the way she’s fiddling with the cap and tugging on the sleeve says it’s probably too hot, too itchy, or too tight and confining and she just wants out of it now.
A couple of years ago my smallest nephew was that age. He wore his costume all day long and when it was time to go Trick or Treating, he fell asleep for the rest of the night.
The trick for making comfortable costumes for kids is to start with a comfortable “base.” My mom made a cute “Tigger” costume for my son. I bought orange sweat pants & shirt, then she made & sewed on a tail, and white belly. She made a hat with ears, but it wasn’t stretchy, so that wasn’t as comfortable. (I think it would have been better to use an orange stocking cap and add the ears & stripes.) I couldn’t find pants the right length, so I bought longer ones, with the elastic around the ankles. They worked well for my sons as they grew taller.
I made many costumes for my kids. When they were young like this, I bought cotton flannel that they could wear for PJs after Halloween (I was poor) and I dyed it if necessary - for a brown robe for Friar Tuck and olive for Robin and Little John (I had 3 boys first). By the time I had a girl who could walk alone, I did Dorothy and the others (eldest boy was the tin man and I used contact glue to attach foil to white sheeting, but it peeled where legs rubbed and he was crying at end of day) -very sad. Costumes otherwise were great!
Coffee Turtle and Alguka- I agree! no time or talents- too bad for the kids. I loved Halloween while Cuddles was alive because it was her day (even if all the kids came just for the candy. My little Timneh is not into people that much so my lights will be out- no fun anymore ;-(

Next year, wrap her in duct tape to keep her from squirming and she can go as the Mummy.

I think Little Bo Peep is just tugging at her dress to get it off.

They should take Farley, too. He IS a Sheepdog.

“You’ll wear this costume, and LIKE IT!”
“I’ll wear it, but I won’t like it!”
In panel 3 she’s pulling the hat off.
