The unpopped ones are not going to pop. It’s too tempting to think they will, but that’s just the way they are. But the popped ones will burn. I remember a VP coming down from the gilded halls of the upper management once to ask why the whole building smelled like smoke. No, it wasn’t me. In a ten minute break, I never had the patience to wait for corn to pop. A bag of chips was faster.
I lost a microwave to someone who set the timer for 40 mins instead of 4 for their popcorn. And it was the microwave I brought to work for everyone to use. Unfortunately, it was “illegal” so I got in trouble and the whole floor smelled like burned popcorn for several days. :o( The microwave was a total loss anyway – it was so burned up on the inside that it was unusable. Don’t know why it didn’t actually start a fire. We were lucky.
About 15 to 20 seconds on the “popcorn” setting gets me more popped kernels without scorching. That’s if you start immediately after the “popcorn” setting has finished and the kernels are still hot. Obviously, you have to pay attention and not wander off, physically or mentally. And as Scott say, you will never get all of the kernels to pop so don’t even think about it…
Had a co-worker completely smoke-bomb the bank branch I was filling in at one evening. I had to work with him the next evening as well. On lunch I ran past the Hallmark store and got a bag of Jelly Belly popcorn flavored jelly beans. I tossed the bag at him when his break time came up and informed him to keep FAR away from the nuker. We smelled that for a solid week.

Sometimes I try to get the unpopped kernels to pop, end up scorching a few popped pieces.
