What’s Sprocket’s makeover going to be? Will be be made less “Hollywood”, and instead he will appear more stuffy and scholarly? That will take some doing…
Wow! I didn’t know about this. Thanks to Neil, 22ph, and of course Mike and Joe for bringing attention to this piece of history. :-)
Now it seems clear that the scam involves “discovering” some 19th century recordings, probably of someone famous. Will it tie in with his Nom De Crime? Maybe a recitation of a known work in order to “prove” that it existed back then.
According to the Wiki article (Hey you KNEW there had to be one) Allegedly Thomas Edison had a phonautograph of Abraham Lincoln, recorded in the Executive Manor. I wonder if Domain is going to try to sell THAT?
After reading the Wikipedia article about Edouard-Léon Scott de Martinville and listening to the 3 versions of the au clair de la lune recording there, I think a scam involving the “rediscovery of the lost Lincoln recording” (as suggested above first by Ron-Ar) seems like a good guess. Silver will have to look like some nerdy but respectable researcher (librarian?), a look that should not be too difficult for Sprocket to achieve, given resources that Public Domain will presumably provide. The question, it occurs to me, is, why didn’t P.D. himself work the scam? Is he known to the police from priors? Or is he setting the Nitrates up to take the fall if the scam goes south?!

Back in the mid 70’s, Diet Smith invented a similar device that produced voice prints of human dialogue.
