That’s what happens when you get back to nature. In many places, nature is cold, wet, and very muddy. Where I happen to live it is usually hot, dusty, and full of spiky things. And it is full of things which have evolved lots of nasty ways to kill you.
Even in the face of all the hardships and dangers they faced during their four year adventure crossing North America, the members of the Corps of Discovery, almost to a man (and woman), agreed that the worst of it all by far was the winter of unrelenting rain they endured camped at the mouth of the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest.
