George Burns expected to get the laughs, and then he recognized that the audiences loved Gracie Allen. So he redid the act to make her the top banana. That’s professionalism.
I’m old enough to remember Phil Silvers. Am I this strip’s target audience? For that matter, am I the newspaper comics’ target audience? Am I actually the whole newspaper industry’s target audience? Is this why I keep getting burial insurance ads in the mail?
I thought “top banana” was the primary star of the entire vaudeville show – the one who got their name in big letters on the marquee.
In context of the strip, I’d think Arlo would be telling Janis that she’s the straight man and he’s the comic of their individual act, heh.
(In fairness to Arlo, he DOES get top billing.)
Now if you want to talk GoComics, going by the front page I imagine the “top banana” is either Luann DeGroot, Elvis from the “Breaking Cat News” anchor desk, or… I don’t know who’s on third.

The great thing about Dad jokes is they’re just as funny the 100th time as they were the first.

Our exchange student didn’t understand “Geet” (jeet?). We had to ask him to use it in a sentence. It was “did you eat?” “Geet yet?”
