Autotomy (auto = self, tomos = cut) is the self-induced releasing of a specific body part. In certain lizards, it is the tail that autotomizes; in plethodontid salamanders (terrestrial salamanders lacking gills and lungs in the adult form), it is their tails, digits, and portions of their limbs. Lizards do not autotomize their digits or limbs. If your lizard’s toes have are falling off, this is a serious medical problem that requires veterinary attention now. In a few lizards, it is pieces of skin that autotomize, a defense strategy known as “fragile skin.”

Some walking sticks or stick insects are able to “autotomize” a lost limb. (New word for me… just trying it out!)

Starfish do it! Geckos do it! Why shouldn’t we do it?

Let us not neglect that we all, to some degree and as Society dictates, do both the first and the second, enhancing and/or camouflaging. But limb autotomy is rare among us (occasional stories are reported about trapped climbers cutting themselves free from a pinning boulder or other mammals autotomizing to get free of a trap).

Is this fair, I ask? Must regeneration be the stuff of science-fiction only?

Get on the ball, you Lame Scientists!
