I managed to go back and see the ‘toons that would have run if the massacre hadn’t taken place (my search engine wouldn’t accept the address that LEFTWINGPATRIOT showed, above, but I just kept going back from July 1989 and found them.) I’m still not sure why they couldn’t have been run, because they didn’t actually show any violence (at least the ones I found didn’t), and I’m not sure who ‘D.C.’ is, who wrote the comment at the bottom saying ‘these are the comics that couldn’t be run’. Anyone know?
I visited China about 20 years ago. I was curious when I visited Tianneman Square as to how the guide would handle it. The guide gave all the ancient history and the present history and never mentioned the protests and the massacre. No fake news. It simply never happened.
When this strip first ran, I was amused enough with it to clip it and tack it to the cork board in my “office”. It’s still there! I clipped it again from today’s paper (yeah, I still read the paper!) and stuck it with the original. It’s a lot smaller today … and in color!
I find it interesting that we recognize the blackouts when it is another govt doing it but growing up in the 1950’s and graduating in the 1960’s, I never learned one thing about WWII. I’ve always thought it was simply because they hadn’t decided on the official story yet.

The Tiananmen Square massacre took place on June 4, 1989. This Arc started June 12, 1989.
On GoComics there are the actual cartoons that would’ve been run if the massacre hadn’t taken happened:

This ink spill story started about three months after the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska.

For all the strips he skipped during these reruns, I never imagined that he’d keep these.

I remember the Tiananmen Square massacre well. Especially the young man who ran out in front of the tanks, he broke my heart.
