    @WTH

    I didn’t see your comment about your loss until this morning. We know that our feline friends and family members have much shorter lives than our, but it is still a wrench when they go.

    But (as I have said before, and will say again) after a suitable period of mourning, the best tribute you can pay her is to go down to the RSPCA. They always have cats and kittens (all neutered, vaccinated, and chipped) who need a good home, and you can provide one.

    When you get another cat (in your own good time, but not too long) you are not forgetting Sofia. You are honouring the joy she brought you by giving another cat a decent life, and the opportunity to bring you more joy.

    (Even if you live in some barbarous, blighted, God-forsaken wasteland where the RSPCA does not operate, there is a good chance you can find a similar organisation.)

    @MVMARTINEK I didn’t see your comment ‘The Cat Replacement Bureau always makes sure that the Catly Hobo markings are renewed, the ones that say “soft touch lives here”’ until today.

    And touches don’t come softer than my brother.

    Oh, wait, my wife says they do, and is looking pointedly at me.

    Puck is so cute! I love BCN – just it was so hard to read today’s strip – very light type and small too.

    I am confused, which leg does Puck not have. In one panel it looks like a front leg, but the others indicate a back leg missing.

    This is without a doubt one of my most favourite arcs! Why shouldn’t they put up pictures of Puck? He saved us from the leaves! :D

    Georgia, I don’t comment often since you’re “public” (and so happy you are!) but I had to share this. There have been a stray couple in my back yard for a year now, I’ve been encouraging them and yesterday I caught the male. Trying for the female today. I was worried about how my large cat family would respond to a new boarder but this morning when I checked the new guy’s room (where he’s sequestered until vet testing, etc) several toys had been shoved under the door! I think this is a Tommy moment!

    Is it just me or does anyone else see a (attitude and suspenders) resemblance between Elvis and Bob Beckel? Not politics, just attitude.

    At a minus 22 degree 1986 New Years AM, a long-haired, 7-toed, chain-drive female Tuxedo cat begged me for help after spending the preceding 3 months hiding under a local tavern, surviving on chicken wings and mice and thus started an 18-year relationship (after spaying, of course) that led us all over the US, for my job needed schools, travel, updates and the usual ’you’re traveling to Mississippi next week’ stuff. Turned out that said cat was an abandoned pet of a couple of ‘breaking up’ teen-agers..The cat went with me, save for the times that I just HAD to ‘board’ the cat. Shortening the tale, the pore kitty came down with diabetes and her sandbox became a ‘mud-box’ and she being 18+ y/o, I had to put her down. Keeping a diabetic cat ‘under control’ was an all-day job in itself. I’d taught her six tricks/words that she’d respond to and obey. Ironically, my younger sis LOVED cats who would hiss and scratch at her as if possessed and at her last days, the MD’s asked if she’d been in contact or scratched by a cat lately? She was and had and was dead 22 weeks later. We were farm kids and always had a load of “house” and “barn” cats, as our previous generations had, just to keep the place ‘rodent-free’… There’s no lesson nor moral to this tale, just a memoir of an old widower, where it’s ‘not a good thing’ to adopt another cat… dammit.

    I’ve kept many different pets over the years, some that naturally have short life spans, others with extremely long natural lives. My Australian Spiny Stick Insect, Matilda, lived a typical year. Though she had no mate, she left eggs which recently hatched. (Her species does not require males to reproduce.) So now I have three babies that are genetically identical to their mother, each cute as a, well, bug. I have a small aquarium with twenty opae ula Hawaiian shrimp, which have twenty year life spans and do not require feeding as long as their tank has a little algae growth for grazing, which theirs does. And Darwin, my nine year old Mediterranean tortoise, will likely live between forty and sixty more years. So the shrimp and the tortoise definitely have to be left to someone in my will. No mammalian pets at present as my housing situation is not conducive to the necessary arrangements. Sigh. I miss my cats and dogs.
