Can the game be played safely? Yes it can. Will there always be some risk? Yes there will be. The objective is to make the risk so minimal that something else will get you first: preferably old age.
It damages brains. If more people were personally effected by damage caused by football injuries, maybe gladiators and lions would be a better sport to watch.
I think the friend’s thought comment is the key. She thinks her friend may be ‘brain damaged.’ But that could also come from a little extracurricular ‘contact sport’ between athlete and admirer.
