I often find that simply waiting for when things have gotten quiet to speak is an excellent way of avoiding conversation while being polite at a gathering. Then when it does get quiet there is a about a 15 second window which is quiet, but not awkward which you can wait to see if someone else will jump in then, you can interject and simply ask for clarification or elaboration on something someone else was talking about and be good for awhile longer.
