Just saw Georgia’s You Tube’s Breaking Cat News about Elvis’ first Christmas. He is in the tree, nearly at the top as is Puck today and her reaction was the same. The reaction of Mocha, a 3 pound kitten, to his first Christmas tree, was to try to eat the tiny lights, the second he moved into and up to the top of the tree where he tried to eat the artificial pine needles. Must be a cat thing, or at least a kitten thing.
years ago, the first day our tabletop tree was up, bentley (before his trip over the rainbow bridge) and bogart were checking out the tree. i took a picture. next picture was said tree on the floor with two kitties circling it, sniffing at it curiously.
There used to be a video posted on the Internet about a lady’s cats who would both get up into her tree and sit there. She had it on some revolving stand and you could watch the cats going around and around like they were on a merry-go-round.
Think of the awe we felt as kids when we saw our first mega-display of Christmas decorations. I remember going to see the Sears store in Fort Wayne! The lights, the trees, the window displays, the smell of caramel corn from the candy counter! This was before the malls. Nowadays it would be dwarfed by the stuff available, but it was wonderful back then!
For cats, it’s like that! They can’t believe the wonder of it & MUST EXPLORE! :-D
I wonder if that’s hot chocolate in Lupin’s mug that he’s swirling a candy cane in? I’m not a fan of candy canes but mint flavoured hot chocolate does sound rather good :)
Years ago I had a cat named Milquetoast. He was a very evil cat, and one fine Christmas night my boyfriend (now husband) and I were lying in bed at about 11:00 and we heard the ornaments start to tinkle. Just started getting up to chase the cat out of the tree when there was a terrific “CRASH!”. We ran out into the living room and there was the tree on its side, and the cat hiding in the kitchen. I was thoroughly disgusted at the mess, and not wanting to deal with it so late at night, I opened the door and launched the tree out onto the lawn, lights, ornaments, and all. Next morning (Boxing Day, which is also my birthday) I went out and salvaged the lights and ornaments and dragged the tree to the curb. And that is the earliest I’ve ever thrown out my Christmas tree.
“How close we talkin’, Lupin?” Ahhh, the “magic and mystery” of Christmas. Quotes accompanied by appropriate faces. Love Lupin’s ever mischievous grin!
Same scene at my house! First Christmas for Midnight Louie and Speckles. Five minutes after the tree was assembled Louie was half way up it and looking just like Puck! Little black face peering out between the branches. I had to reassemble the tree every morning for three days. Don’t think I will attempt ornaments this year. Less a temptation and more of an invitation!
When my daughter was young we had a small cat who always climbed the tree. My father bolted the stand onto a large square of plywood which allowed her to climb up and sleep in the branches. We had wooden ornaments, so all was well. I also discovered that a ornament that makes noise, attached to a low branch, seems to keep my gang on the ground. ( For anyone wondering I bought a small plastic ornament ball and filled it with bells. Makes a satisfactory jingle and keeps my three fascinated.)
I’ve never had room for a Christmas tree, but my second pair used to climb the huge spruce trees in the inner courtyard of my condo complex while I waited impatiently at the bottom. They could get down by themselves, but having a servant’s shoulder for the last 5 feet or so was their privilege, of course.
Our first artificial tree was when they first came out with realistic evergreen and very expensive. It was set up on a table and the next morning one of the lower limbs was on the table and bend. It was replaced and the morning the same thing. Did I say it was very expensive? The next day I happened to see a yellow tail hanging between the branches. Aha, the mystery was solved. Penny was not punished, everyone thought it so funny and cute, but he never tree sat after that. Guess he thought he had to find another hidden observatory.
Jingle Belle Katt hasn’t climbed the tree…yet. She does, however, swat at the lower hanging ornaments, occasionally knocking one off the tree. We keep the non-breakable ornaments on the lower half of the tree. Occasionally we resort to the deadly bottle o’squirt. I honestly think this is an attention-seeking device, though. I was sitting at the dining room table when I heard the tell tale sound of claws hitting styrofoam ornament……….then she looked over her shoulder at me as if to say, “Hey, mom, see what I’m doing! Whattya going to do about it?” My response, “Squirt—squirt!” Then she runs and hides for a few minutes…
Natasha and Ash (when they were still this side of the bridge) would sit/lay under the tree, look up and see all the pretty lights. Vlad on the other hand likes to EAT the tree. Sebastian picked up the habit. One year I had a chicken wire fence around it. Now, I just put up the tree one week before and take it down the day after. Out of all the cats I’ve had my entire life, not a singe one tried to climb it. Though Vlad and Sebastian are the first ones that have tried to eat it.
Many years ago, I received a set of large, cookie ornaments in various shapes decorated with hard sugar icing. Technically they were edible. One night the cat knocked each of them down and licked off all the icing. We awoke to find bare cookie ornaments scattered under the tree.
Yang and his brother Yin never showed any interest in the tree, which worked out well for their younger “uncle” Yen who climbed it to get away from them. In later years, when my mother remarried and my stepfather added a train set to the decor, was far more fascinated by that.

Corner of panel one says pre-taped. I think that means this happened before Elvis went missing, and he just happened to not be there.

You know, I’m more or less a Vegas native. Maybe I should do like Puck and climb a flashy tree!

Silly woman – don’t pull a cat! They’ll dig their claws in harder! Try spooking him off, instead.

And, as we all know, when a kitten sees its first Christmas tree, the thought that passes through its mind is “For ME????!!!!!”

Finder climbed our tree once. Wouldn’t come out. Finally we resorted to the Squirt Bottle, and he STILL stayed there for a couple of squirts.

It’s always been obvious to cats that a Christmas tree is there for their amusement. I mean, come on, what other purpose could it have?

Didn’t you know, Mooshu and Tweede’s Staff, that cats only pick up each other’s BAD habits when one is new to the family?
