Aldi must be a U.K. chain. I’ve never heard of them before this week.
We shop once a month at the SuperMaxi supermarket for household staples and grocery items not available elsewhere. We purchase all of our fruits, vegetables, fish, chicken, meat, eggs, cheese etc. fresh at the open air mercados on a weekly basis. Daily needs can be purchased at the any of the neighborhood tiendas. Many items, like bottled water, fresh milk, propane gas, etc. are still sold door to door by vendedores every day.
I have seen Aldi in Southern California — never shopped in one.
Several stores in the Phoenix area [including Fry’s (Kroger), Albertson’s, and Safeway] have radio-controlled locking wheels on their carts in certain neighborhoods. If you try to remove the cart from the parking lot, the wheels lock, rendering the cart useless.
Actually, you get your quarter back when you lock the cart back up. Aldi is a great money-saving store, and they do this so they do not need to send their people out to cart-wrangle. I love Pab, and I love this strip. As a regular Aldi shopper, I am chuckling, but I also know how things work. Overall, I love the quality and selection of most products at Aldi.
Our local ALDI re=opens tomorrow after being closed 6 weeks for an extensive remodel and expansion. We do most of our shopping there, also, Jo-Ann Fabrics has the same 2 bit cart system, more stores in the plaza should have them also, especially when it snows. All those loose carts wind up in a snowbank, spring is here when the carts reappear.
As much as Pab blasts Adli I bet he is a regular there as they do have some good worthwhile stuff; you shop judiciously for what you want and shop the rest other places.
I looked inside an Aldi once here in the US, just out of curiosity. They don’t take credit cards and all the registers are self-service, so I never became a customer of theirs.
