What makes it even worse is that Hobbes is the brains of the operation.

And then kindergarten would be too easy for Calvin if he did flunk back. Right?

Calvin’s quote at the end is one of the funniest lines in history- this or any other medium. To just COMPLETELY miss the point and go off on the wrong idea like that takes a special kind of kid, and a special kind of genius to make that joke.

Calvin is wrong, Einstein was a very good student! The myth that he wasn’t has been created by a sloppy biographer who saw Einstein’s Graduation Certificate was full of Sixes and didn’t realise Six was the best grade in Switzerland, not the worst as in most other countries.

A bit of an off topic rant: I have chafed at the importance given to math scores as an indicator of intelligence ever since 7th grade, when I was helping kids who I knew were smart with their math. It is just a talent, not a mark of some sort of genius. (Puts soapbox away.) Thanks for listening – I feel better now.

Calvin is, in fact, highly intelligent; he just focuses his abilities on things he’s interested in.

I look at the comments that use Calvin’s logic to bash both ends of the political spectrum. The fact that readers continue to find links between Waterson’s observations and contemporary events, more than 20 years after the strips concluded, demonstrate where the REAL genius lies.

As a kid, I loved to read and I’m not stupid but I HATED school. I squeaked by each grade and finally flunked out of college. After the service, I went back to night school and applied myself because it was important to me. I graduated with a 3.75 GPA. Some of us are just slow to grow up.

30 years later: Susie Derkins is very competent and follows instructions well in her clerical work. Calvin is the billionaire CEO of the company.

I also got bad grades. Well I did get good grades too but only a couple.

Does that make me smart or not?

Calvin could grow up to be the next president – the ego is already there.
