Yes, if the bird bath freezes, it can crack, just like ours did. No skating for Woodstock.

Alasko: I was about to post what I thought might have been a witty comment, but, as soon as I read yours, I knew that any attempt would be futile. Good one! No, it’s a great one!

Cars are an important one. If the antifreeze level is not up to the expected temperatures it is better to drain the engine and radiator. The car won’t be usable until it can be filled with proper coolant but at least the block won’t crack. Here in Flagstaff I maintain a 60/40 concentration because 50/50 is marginal for the worst of the cold snaps (-30F in nearby Bellemont).

In this space yesterday, I commented (moaned, whined, b!tched) about how we’ve already had two snowfalls in New Jersey this season. Oh, joy. Number three is coming this afternoon. 2-4 inches. And it’s not even freakin’ winter yet!

OMG … where do they live? It’s December. It gets cold every once and a while. It was 19 here at 7 last night. I had to put on my winter sweatshirt when we walked around downtown.

6 degrees here in Maine right now and yes under the snow the grass is still green. But in my greenhouse you can lay out and get a suntan with temps in the 80’s and 90’s — it’s just like summer.

Solution: Get heated birdbaths. We had three in Wisconsin, and the birds used them all winter long.

I guess they don’t have frost proof taps where they live.

I have bought white plastic birdbaths for some years, maybe 15 or longer? Their design is classic, nice looking. Lightweight, easy to handle, move around, and clean. Put in the garage over the winter, but here in NH once they’re frozen over, the birds won’t come. Have thought of a heater but it’s too much trouble. They last 3 or 4 years, then buy a new one fifteen dollars or so now, used to be less. The only time one broke, my tenant was trying to get the ice out and he hit it too hard!
