A normally straight-A student was close to failing in algebra, so her parents hired me to tutor her. I quickly discovered that she clearly understood the concepts of algebra… so why was she failing her homework and tests? Wrong answers! It turned out that she had never learned the multiplication table… and her previous “math” teachers hadn’t noticed.
A couple of weeks of drill on the table, and she was getting A grades in algebra… and I was happily out of a job.
But that leaves me wondering… how many folks “hate” math — maybe even reject any explanations or arguments that use it — because their education has missed something as simple and basic as the above, and their teachers (it must be plural) either didn’t notice or didn’t care?
Repeat the class until it is passed. Disciplinary action should be doing homework and studying for test and quizzes. Parents should sit down with the student to help and make sure the work is done. Or hire a tutor
