I wasn’t feeling well once when I was a kid but mum sent me anyway. Turned out I had the start of the Mumps and I infected half the class. Bad mistake on her part.
According to my mother’s thinking, being home sick meant you were really sick and should be confined to bed the entire time. No radio, television, toys, or activities.
Precautionary absences from school, ( slight fevers, head colds, coughs etc. ) meant bed rest and/or chores around the house. My mother’s to-do list for invalids was guaranteed to get my brother and me healthy in a hurry, and wanting to go to school !
In our house, both my wife and I worked so, until the reached an age where we trusted them to be by themselves (yes, in the Old Days, it was the determination of the parents that mattered) we brought in a “nanny” and after that, I simply ‘killer the A.C. to the living room at the circuit box, which disabled both the television and the entertainment center. Times were simpler then, sigh. I truly feel for today’s parents! (though it’s not sympathy, they need; it’s sanity, in my opinion!) Most people say, if they had a “time machine” they’d go back in time and kill Hitler or Tojo; I think my first target would be Doctor Benjamin Spock!

My parents made the same deal with me many times. So now I have a trunkful of things I can hold against them. But what do I do with that?
