Have been an avid “lurker” on the comment board and decided I needed to share how much I have enjoyed reading the opinions, assessment and analysis of “ourboy” by those on the board.
Have to wait for Marg to post, then I will release this one.
Today it looks like Calvin has found a dramatic way to communicate his innermost feelings through an artistic medium.
——————————————
Well, the year is coming to an end. A year of watching a lifeless stuffed tiger lying on the ground, which Calvin mistakenly thinks has come to life, by virtue of his imagination. Or, a year of watching a tiger who actually is alive, by virtue of our imagination. It all depends on our point of view.
As a new year begins, what sorts of things can we imagine that we would like to bring to life? Developing a new skill? Gaining some new knowledge? Writing a book or a play or some poetry? Creating a work of art? Writing or performing some music? Starting a business or a new career? Joining a support group? Cultivating a new relationship with another person? Bringing an old relationship back to life? Becoming more religious? Donating our time for volunteer work? Donating our money for the good of others? Helping out a neighbor? Rescuing an animal from a shelter? Bringing new meaning into the life of a child?
In order to bring something to life, it all depends on our point of view. First we must imagine what it is that we might bring to life, and then we must imagine that we might be able to accomplish it.
How many years has one of our dreams been waiting for us to accomplish it? Will we go yet another year with that same dream lying lifeless on the ground? Or will this be the year that we bring it to life, finally accomplishing what we have imagined to be possible?
Let us not just decide that we will simply pursue our dreams sometime during this coming year. Let us begin right away to turn our dreams into reality. This weekend is the best time for us to take the first steps.
If you have a dream that you will be pursuing this year, please feel free to share it with the rest of us if you wish.
Have a very Happy New Year, everyone. I hope that for each of you, this coming year will turn out to be even better than you had imagined.
I don’t see this as bringing something to life:
I see it as acting out in a passive aggressive manner
and I will hate to see to what lengths Calvin goes as a
teenager. I have not been liking Calvin lately. He has moved from just being an ornery little boy to much too sinister and downright criminal in his attitudes.
Now the rest of you Calvin lovers, don’t beat me up too hard.
Hi odeliasimone. I wouldn’t worry too much about Calvin becoming a teenager. He’s only 6 years old, and this coming year he will be celebrating his 6th birthday.
Calvin you are one smart guy why can’t you use smartness in your school work instead of causing so much trouble in school.
Calvin that clever of you getting back at dad like that.
Everyone of us has had a situation in which we feel like Calvin is expressing his emotions here. As usual Bill W. captures the essence of our emotions with a few pen and ink sketches. Thank you Mr Watterson for all the enjoyment through the years.
My snowmen never look very good, but in the far north.snow is not very good for making snow balls or snow men when its almost always below zero, old scale.
Hobbes: I usually don’t read the comments when they run more than a few lines, because people tend to ramble, but since you’re a wise tiger, I read yours and enjoyed it. You’re so very right.
Thanks again for the focus and have a most joyous New Year with your imaginary friend, Calvin!
Finally becoming bored with all the snow and being cooped up (and schools being shut down too long), our three boys built a gigantic snow commode (about 6 feet tall) in the front yard complete with the back water tank, raised seat lid, a snow roll of toilet paper sitting on the top of the tank. To complete the illusion, they even placed a couple of “doggie loggies” in the bowl. People were stopping and snapping pictures and laughing out loud.
Joylion: I second your comment from yesterday! I, too, wish Go Comics would add “Peanuts” to their Comic Strip A-Z Listing. I’ve got that comic bookmarked elsewhere but I’d much rather read it here because that site doesn’t have a forum of any kind to make fun comments like we do (here). I sent Go Comics a request earlier today regarding the addition of “Peanuts” to the list so I’ll be waiting to see if they contact me back and what they’ll say.
P.S.: Maybe it would help if other “Peanuts” fans would make a similar request to Go Comics too???
Couple of things here - when Calvin gets that look he has in the second panel, he reminds me of what my grandfather used to look like. Also, in spite of being non-athletic (playing games with other kids) Calvin is as strong as an ox, pushing and stacking huge balls of snow, not to mention pushing his parent’s car out of the garage and down the street…..
There was a recent “On the Fastrack” (Bill Holbrook) that had idle employees building a similar snowman to peer in upon the CEO in her upper story office.
I love your comments, always. And while I have to agree that Calvin gets pretty psychotic as he goes on, he reminds me that “there but for the grace of God might’ve gone I”.
My favorite series of strips is when Calvin creates a “good” doppleganger of himself. Second is when he goes time-traveling trying to avoid writing a story and two temporal versions of Hobbes write one for him, earning Calvin an A+. :)) Brilliant.
