Imagination is a wonderful thing. I’m not sure that the toys of today (everything must work like the real thing) encourage the imagination and that is sad. When we picked up the toy phone we had to make up the conversation.
The snowman theme is by far my favorite in Calvin and Hobbes. What imagination! And the drawings are incredible. I agree that today´s kids are missing out on so much with their toys. Our imaginations were the key component in making them work. Today´stoys state “batteries not included” while ours said ” imagination not included” because imagination is what fueled them. By the way, speaking of toys… down here in Mexico it is the day of the “Reyes Magos” (the 3 kings)and all the kids get their toys today more than on the 25th, so happy Epiphany to all! Ho, ho!
Surely mom has a blow torch somewhere in the kitchen for when she makes creme brulee. Chances are it hasn’t ever been used. I would say NOW is the time to turn the bad boy on. Feel the heat now Snow Boy?
Usually Hobbes is full of wisdom and ideas that save Calvin from trouble (if and when Calvin listens to him).. however, this time around Hobbes idea proved evil fr them :p
what disturbs me about Calvin, in a cartoony sort of way, is that he’s such a solitary kid. His only friend (that I’ve seen) is Hobbes, and he’s imaginary—real only to Calvin. The only real kid in the strip is Suzy, an adversary.
I just came home from ten days with three teenagers. It is impossible to play anything anymore because only one hand is available for work or play-the other is wrapped around a telephone. You begin to be paranoid. Text: Gramma is a real drag, keeps talking about when we were babies.
Where is that snow cannon when Calvin needs one? He should build it to blow a hole through the evil snowman, just as he has done in other snowman adventures.
If his brain stays small you can out smart him maybe ?Calvins real brave to go out side with only Hobbes as backup,Hobbes can be unpredictable as we have seen before.
I encourage my granddaughter’s imagination like I did with my son’s by not buying toys with batteries. The first gaming system my son had was when he was working his first job at the age of 16 and I still only let him play it for a hour a day. Parents still seem to be afraid to set limits with their kids. My son has a great imagination because of it. He always had a piece of paper and a pen in hand now as well as in school. He still writes alot of stories and poetry with his own illustrations like he did in school. He’s done alot of design and writing work in his jobs as well as in the schools. He’s still working on his Art degree between parenting and working full-time. You have to encourage your kids to think for themselves or they’ll let someone else do it for them!
I questioned calling it snow man from the beginning because you can see Suzie doing something like this, but then I changed my mined because she cant see Hobbes.
Speaking of imagination. Our boys, after hugging Grandma and Grandpa when we visited two or three times a year (we lived several hundred miles away), would go and immediately drag out an old cardboard box full of junk. Thread spools, string, old purses, various and sundry blocks of wood, plastic utensils, rubber bands, shoe boxes, and things I don’t even remember, but junk non the less. Now middle aged, they still fondly remember Grandma’s cardboard toy box.
They also quickly learned they had to put them away when through playing!!!!!
Snowmen rent a blowtorch from Weight Watchers when they want to slim down a bit. Calvin still learning about the law of unintended consequences here, it seems…
I was a “horse” (prance about and run and whinney) many hours in my childhood until I was about 12. Dogs were my adventuresome playmates in the countryside where I grew up with no other children close by.
cleokaya: Yikes! If you had a 6-year-old like Calvin running around, would you keep a blowtorch of any kind in the house?!? I know I wouldn’t! I’d be afraid their streak of mischief or curiosity would have me burning to death in my bed some night!
What an imagination Calvin has!
I fondly remember the good times whenever anyone in the neighborhood got a new appliance (especially a fridge). There’s no limit to what a cardboard box can become… in the mind of a child with an imagination.
