I think there has been some kind of significant time passage between the second panel and the third panel. The refrigerator door drawings do not appear to be on the door in the first panel, and the refrigerator door handle of the first panel is gone by panel 3. The drawers in the final panel showing towels and water and utensil cords and an open cabinet are nowhere to be found in Panel 1. John is popping the top of some “Pffttt” beverage in Panel 2, but in the final panel, he is drinking from a coffee cup.
I get Elly. My grown son and his wife and son lived with us for almost 2 years. Son and wife are terrible housekeepers as in they were not housekeepers at all. Hey, I raised my son to keep his room clean and he knows his housekeeping but now that he is adult, he is saying to me he doesn’t care to do it. I stayed away from my own house a lot, spent a lot of time shopping, sitting in coffee houses watching Netflix or reading my Kindle and ate my dinners until bedtime which was when I went home – because I couldn’t stand the mess. I decided I was not cleaning after two people capable of cleaning after themselves. When they moved out, I was overjoyed. My home is clean again and I came home right after work. They are never going to move back ever.
I would never bring a friend home to “have coffee” if my place were looking like that! I’m a neat freak and still hate if someone drops by and there are papers strewn on the coffee table!
My mother was a stay-at-home mom of five kids. Once the older three left, it was just me and my older brother (we were quite similar to Mike and Lizzie, actually). She kept an incredibly neat house. Not perfect, of course – my brother and I would play outside all day, and messes would result – but still spic and span. We had to take our shoes off before coming inside, wash our hands before touching anything, close the door so as to not let flies in, and use plates/sit down when we ate. All good habits, I might add. Plus, we were homeschooled, so our mother never got “alone time” to clean the house.
So, yeah, I don’t really get why Elly’s house is in such an extreme state of disarray. Bring on the hate, but it’s just odd to me!
My mom was a clean everything in the house every day type and she worked at it. Her reputation was such that when she drove down our half mile long dirt driveway, the dust didn’t even bother to get up.
Details: They appear in movies all the time. Example 1: “The Huns” broke through the great wall of china – with a jet streak in the background. Example 2: “How the west was won” 1880 gun fight atop train, with a high-tension power line beside the tracks!
For all of the “what if” choices that some of us may have made along the way with regards to that scenario, taking the final panel into consideration, there is a bit of relief in having made the right choice. Whew…..

I can’t imagine why she can’t relax, John! I looked around the kitchen and saw absolutely no reason Elly could not have a relaxing cup of coffee!

Elly gives the impression of being so high strung that an operating room would not be clean enough for her.

Has Lynn been getting ideas from my kitchen? To answer the Duck- stuff gets reused and lands in a different spot.

Gee, I wonder why Elly would feel that way?
