Look up nomorobo – it’s a free service (for land lines), works through your phone carrier and no, you do not get spammed. In fact they redirect you to your carrier’s site where you get instructions on how to set it up.
In our neck of the woods Bell Canada runs the Do Not call list yet they are the ones selling phone lists to the very folks they are supposed to stop. Like asking the fox to guard the henhouse and our Government allows it.

Land line with answering machine – if the caller doesn’t give an identity to the machine, s/he obviously doesn’t want to talk with me.
