I seriously doubt a loss of hearing will affect his nose and an arm load of groceries or a can being opened is easy to detect.

My parents had a deaf Pug named ChooChoo. I remember coming over to the house to find my father on all fours with his arm stuck out the doggy door, trying to get ChooChoo’s attention. He was a colonel in the Air Force. During the Viet Nam war he commanded 5000 men. I thought, if only they could see him now.

As a geriatric dog owner………er…. owner of a geriatric dog…er… (never mind – it’s correct both ways), I like this story arc. I was able to teach her hand signals before she went completely deaf. Old dogs CAN learn new tricks.

My daughter’s deaf dog couldn’t be scared of thunderstorms, and that was such a blessing. Yin and yang.

We rescued a fifteen year old Sheltie: Couldn’t hear, couldn’t see, but she sure did smell.

When I was kid our dog went deaf when he was still young (genetic problem) and it never slowed him down.

Not quite true. My deaf ABPT could sense people coming onto the property and would bark before they even knocked on the door.

Problem was, big and menacing as he looked, he’d probably let you take everything out of the house, if you were friendly with him. He worked for pats and treats.

I have a deaf and blind Pomeranian. Believe me, he knows the second I walk in the door, and he can smell when I have food. He’s my baby.
