Reid makes it sound like G.H. is some kind of crime boss that topper wants to tip the advantage against. Nothing like feeding into the media perception, eh Britt ? He’s “pretty” much like millionaire Bruce Wayne.
It seems odd to me that Reid, a publisher himself, would give a press interview with another newspaper. In fact, it seems odd that he would publicize that Green Hornet was in the city. It would seem easier for the Hornet to sneak into town and simply do his business without any hoopla. This just seems to shine a spotlight on the Hornet.
An interesting problem for the developing storyline. Green Hornet is perceived as a villain and, as such, will be hunted by Tracy. As BillJackson1 has already noted, above, Green Hornet will have to escape. Add this to the several escaped criminals of late, and methinks it’s Dick Tracy who will be licking his wounds!
Cyrus Topper! A new would-be Crime Boss for Tracyville, immigrating from Central City (where there is probably too much competition for a dapper Cosmo Topper-like gangster and too much heat from the cops and the Green Hornet). He probably heard of the void in crime leadership left when Mr. Bribery was incarcerated. I’m fairly certain he did not expect that the Green Hornet would follow in pursuit, so to put Fear into him Britt Reid is insuring the broadest possible publicity of his presence in Tracyville—hence, Wendy Wichel, the supreme gossip goddess of her day!
Since there are so many people who do not know anything about The Green Hornet, here is some background. The Green Hornet is actually newspaper publisher Britt Reid, who poses as a master criminal to destroy crime from the inside. The character was created for the radio, first airing in 1936. He is assisted by Kato, his faithful Japanese valet (he became Filipino after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941), who is a skilled chemist and mechanic; he also drives the Black Beauty, the Hornet’s car. Britt Reid was, in the radio show, the son of The Lone Ranger’s nephew Dan Reid. The character then appeared in comic books, as well as two serials “The Green Hornet” (1940) and “The Green Hornet Strikes Again!” (1941); Gordon Jones played Britt Reid/The Green Hornet in the first one, while Warren Hull essayed the role in the second one, and Keye Luke played Kato (who was described as a Korean for the serials) in both. In 1966, The Green Hornet got his own TV series, which aired 1966-67. Unlike “Batman”, the Hornet series was played straight. Van Williams played the title character and a then unknown actor named Bruce Lee played Kato. Then came Seth Rogen’s lamentable 2011 movie, which featured Jay Cho as Kato; Cho’s performance is the one bright spot in the entire dismal film.
People keep saying Topper looks like the Leo G. Carroll version. I was thinking he had more of the features of Boris Karloff though. Maybe a mixture of both.

It is times like this that I regret never having paid any attention to the Green Hornet. Haven’t a clue where this is going, or who the players are…

What Brainiac thought we needed an “Overview”? How many of you decided not to read the current days strip based on what you saw in the “Overview”?
What a colossal waste of time!Bill would have said Good Morning! to the overview.
Morrow would have mocked the overview
Sydney would have bold typed the overview.

Was Christoph Waltz’ villain in the 2011 movie created wholly for said cinematic endeavor, or did he have a history in the comics?
