Last year what actually happened was Elly woke and found that John’s gift to her was to take the kids out of the house for the whole day, so she would have the whole place to herself. “All you gave me was flowers!” is a little bit of a retcon because of feedback from people who believed that Mother’s Day should be spent with the children.
Sometimes I look at the calendar and see I have two weeks to whatever. Then something happens we get busy and whatever is now upon us. I’m glad for computers because you can set reminders daily.
Today is a day for those of us who have lost our mothers to think of the good days we had with them, and maybe even donate to a charity working to cure what cost them their lives (if they didn’t simply die due to ‘old age’…) Count your blessings, those whose loving moms are still with you.
Hug your Mom today, and everyday and say I love you if u live with them, if not at least call every now and then and don’t be afraid to express your love. I always did, and it tempered the lost when she died. I have had so many friends that regretted they didn’t say I love you in time, they were planning to but never got the chance. :(
Panel 7 will never happen IRL if reservations aren’t placed at least 2 days before. The place will be packed with families and couples who are trying to get away from the kids for the day.
My mother died this past March. My older daughter’s best friend is in town only for 4 days, as she moved away last summer. She had invited my daughter for a sleepover last night. My daughter almost declined! She told me, “Mom, it’s Mother’s Day, the first without YOUR mother. It’ll be hard on you & I want to be there for you.” I explained to her that her friend is only going to be here this weekend & she shouldn’t miss it. “I’ll live.” I’m touched by the sacrifice she was willing to make for me, and hope that she & her friend are having a marvelous time. [Side note: My mother-in-law is remembered only because my mother insisted (long story).]
And he didn’t even buy her a card since he forgot what day it was. But if he did remember and go to the store he would have got sticker shock from the price on Mother’s Day cards. Wow, I know moms are worth it but the prices the card companies are charging makes me want to go back to my schooldays and make a card myself. Cant’ wait to see how much Father’s Day cards will be next month, although I don’t have to buy them anymore unfortunately.
My son (only child) died last August of cancer. We were together, in church, last Mother’s Day, and I realized then it would be our last. This past Friday, I had my hair trimmed where I always go. Within an hour after I got home, a beautiful florist bouquet of white daisies, white carnations, lupine (pink & purple spikes), and other blossoms & greenery arrived from the three young stylists. It was such an unexpected gift/blessing!
Good thing that John is making the kids clean the car. Since the daughter was negligent with Farley, she is now working off her punishment, or as she is now known as, John and Elly’s:

My greatest memory of my wife, is when I hear my daughters say that they had a great role model on how to be a Mother ! ! ! !

Clean and vacuum the car? John is helping the kids to get started in a future career for them to be self-employed as Lyft drivers.

Nice save and quick thinking, John. But what are you going to do to top it next year (if you remember, that is!)?
