Not the poor, (nor the government, for that matter). what a load of crap. what did the millionaires and billionaires do with the tax cuts they got? create jobs? that’s why we’ve lost several million jobs in this decade. the government is one of the biggest employers. as one of the top three weapons dealers, if that doesn’t create jobs. being in the protection business creates jobs. also look at all the mercenaries, err contractors, at work in iraq and afghanistan. not to mention two or three carrier groups in the persian gulf or the med.

Proper test of Mike’s work would be to secure him to the boat for the next ‘trial run’. It is when the theorist is REQUIRED to stand behind his work that the “rubber meets the road”!

I hope that Mike is not a “Mouth Breather” at that point.

Sounds like trickle-down theory to me as in the water that splashes into the boat will trickle down through the holes and back into the ocean. We all know how well the trickle-down theory has worked in the past.

Wiley’s cartoons must have a political Rorschach test effect on some people. I’ve thought this before, but today clinches it. A little bit of suggestion and people immediately ‘see’ whatever political slant they are looking for.

I think you will find that the government IS in fact producing value - they actually MAKE the money, the real thing, not Big Business, which merely moves it around - there is only as much money in circulation as the Central Bank (or Mint or whatever your particular country uses) issues - nothing more. So in fact, the only money the government has is was it gives to us and asks for back in taxes.

And as for tax cuts for the rich, well, if you are rich, it is a nice thing, but history shows that trickle-down economics doesn’t actually work, it is a flawed theory, which is why once Bush Senior decided to run for office, the war word was “Its the ECONOMY, stupid!” - because Reaganomics failed and the message had to that he had a fix for things - to keep hitting the same failed toy with a hammer won’t fix it, it will simply make it more intractably broken.

Does that mean we should heavily tax the rich? No, not really, but since there are so many loopholes now that the rich barely pay anything near their share of taxes, perhaps we should reconsider how to fix the system altogether - flat tax has been mooted in the past, and there are other ideas that might work. Either way, more of the same is not the answer, and it was bone headed in the first place to cut taxes during a war. That, too, is economy 101 - don’t cut taxes when you need them the most - during wars and national crises…..

On topic, comic is amusingly open-ended. If we are going with politics, then it reminds me of the government bailouts. Just drill a few more holes and we will keep on sinking… Let’s not stop spending or anything.

Anyone remember The Simpsons episode where they dig themselves into an unclimbable pit? “We’ll dig our way out!!!” No, no, dig UP, stupid!” Classic.

I may be wrong, of course, but I think I’m the only member of our little debating society who is actually a professional economist, nearing the end of a long and (I think) quite successful career.

I’ve heard “Economics 101” thrown back and forth like a football, usually by people who have come up with half of a thought, and think it qualifies them to lecture others with complete confidence about How It All Works. (Never mind that even a room full of Nobel-laureate economists wouldn’t be able to come to a consensus about some things.)

This is all giving me a case of the pip, so I’ve decided to keep my own counsel and not keep putting myself into the middle of a dogfight – an expert opinion won’t be missed anyway. I only ask you, please, not to use the word “economics”: you’re entitled to have your views, and to share them if you feel you must, but you’re not entitled to give them the name of credentials that they haven’t earned.

“We just didn’t go far enough with it!”

I’ve seen that mentality in action. On Wall Street, in religion, in sports, in my own office. People think that if something doesn’t work, they just have to take even more extreme length and, miraculously, it will work. The results are always the same: disaster, fiasco, financial ruin. So here’s an interesting thought to humanity as a whole (not just politicos or execs or what have you): if it doesn’t work the first time, go back and see what went wrong. Learn from your mistakes instead of repeating them. But since I know that will never happen, I’ll just sit here and fantasize about pushing the Big Red Button and putting a lasting end to stupidity.

A rising tide lifts all boats. Unless there are holes in your fundamental theory of what it takes to float a boat. The fundamental theories of both sides of the political debate have holes big enough, through which, to throw a boat. I don’t have the credentials to explain how it seems obvious that the current economic system is all just a Ponzi scheme, so I just try to keep my head above water while I try to hold up my end of the boat.

    So’s your Rorschach.

2 morons were up on ladders, nailing up siding. 1 moron kept pulling nails out of his belt pouch, looking at them, and throwing every other one away.

“Why you doin’ that?” the other one asked.

“Heads are on the wrong end,” the 1st one replied.

“Why, you dope, those are for the other side of the house!”

I knew a fellow like that–he saved those nails in a tin can for the other side–but somehow it got turned around in handling, so the nails were all useless…

One reason that reducing the tax rates on the rich may increase income is that the rich, who can afford to find and use tax shelters and loopholes, may not try so hard if they get to keep 70% rather than 50% of what they make on the top end…

@sayhow Have you noticed that the rich didn’t use their tax cuts to create jobs, as planned, but to line their pockets? At least if they’re appropiately taxed, they’ll be pulling their weight.

SCAATY_423, I don’t think you understood what I meant by Big Red Button…or maybe you did. “Make it all better.” What I meant was the mythical button said to be in the Oval Office that would launch a nuclear attack, instigating the total annihilation of all life on Earth. Which, IMO, would make things all better. And yes, I’m aware that’s a nihilistic, unhealthy attitude. But when did I ever say I was healthy?

For me this cartoon epitomizes the way in which eBay’s chief headless turkey, John Donahoe, is running the eBay Marketplace into the ground.

And, undoubtedly the chief headless turkey intends to keep drilling more holes in the rusting old eBay hulk.
