That’s a fair comment from a student who can see no point in the study of all the miscellany that comes under Social Studies! I too have taught (quite incidentally, mind you) Social Studies along with English to students of various grades.
Memorizing all the dates at which important events occurred is unnecessary, but understanding how momentous historical events impacted the world is indispensable learning to ensure that past mistakes are not repeated.
