“The Princess and the Platypus”… sounds like an Australian parody of “The Princess and the Frog” (the Aussie cane toad is too invasive to kiss anyway).
The arc is not over. Fay has to go to somewhere Axel is to ask him out. I think that is where this is going now. Thursday, Friday, then Saturday is the payoff. My only question is whether Luann will be able to get out of character (as Axel for those who are slow), or is she stuck like that (lol).
Okay, I got a question, in the third panel the difference in mom and daughters skin tones are obvious; could Fay be the child of an interracial couple?
Luann is caught with a guilty conscience in panel 1. Fay provides a lie by omission/misdirection. Will this come back to bite them later? Will it be this week? Or will this little subterfuge ensure a carry-over of this arc into next week?
Axel’s mom runs into Mrs. Garcia at the grocery store, “So much fun to hear that Axel and Faye are having a date. I had thought you were against that sort of thing at her age … .”
I’d like to respectfully request that those of you who (on previous occasions) address one another with mocking nicknames drop the practice. Obviously you’re free to do as you like, but I sure would appreciate it if y’all would declare a truce, and try going at least a week without needling one another. If that works okay, then try another week of it.
Shoot, my timing’s off; should’ve asked y’all to do this for Lent. If it’s still an issue next year, and we’re all here, I’ll ask again then! :)
Uh, hmmm…. I am very disappointed in the actions today. Both Luann and Fay lied to Mrs. Garcia. While lying can sometimes occur as part of a variety of story arcs… the disappointing aspect for me today in this lying is that at least in my read of the characters… neither Luann nor Fay showed any hesitation, or nervousness, or hesitation, or guilt, or remorse about lying to Mrs. Garcia. To me, this is really poor form on both of their parts. They both know that what they were doing was not what Mrs. Garcia wanted, neither of them tried to get her approval before hand, and both are actively and without any apparent guilt, covering up their actions. It has me feeling Luann is failing in this aspect of being a mentor. She has been successful in coaching and guiding Fay in a lot of ways, but this subterfuge aspect is not what a mentor should do in this situation. Fay coming up with the lie of “The Princess and the Platypus” is also something I find negative as well.
+ + + + +
For me, this is surprising coming from Greg. I have to imagine he has a greater purpose for this, however. In my mind, he must be building up to discovery of the subterfuge and potential repercussions. In order to do this, I am imagining in my mind that Friday and Saturday will somehow lead up to Mrs. Garcia discovering what is really going on. And, then if I am right, I suspect next week will be about Mrs. Garcia confronting Luann and Fay. Hopefully, apologies will then occur and a meeting of “the minds” will also occur and Fay will be approved for some restricted and guided pursuit of Axel.
@SUE1863: If Fay asks Axel out, she would have to tell her mother; both she and Axel are too young to drive, so someone’s mother would be needed. And there is no reason to assume that Mrs. Garcia would automatically assume that the sole reason why Fay asked Axel out was because Luann taught her how to conquer her internal fears, and ask him. Fay would have to tell her mother that Luann coached her. With the great ease that Fay showed in making up a play name to cover for why Luann’s face was distorted, I would think Fay would have no difficulty in omitting information about where she got the gumption to ask Axel out. Frankly, I would prefer that Luann’s mentoring efforts end, though, because I’d rather that Luann go back to working with groups of kids and not just one. I have no problem with Fay as a character, but I’d rather see her as part of a group. That would give Luann more experience in general teaching, which seems to be the career direction Lu is about to pick…
While 13 is too young to date, this strip makes a good point about hyper controlling parents. Everything a kid says to them will eventually become a lie. Not a good situation.
This is a low impact arc, something like the seventh inning stretch in a baseball game. It will be forgotten even before the last panel slips quietly into the mist. And, that’s okay.

Let’s hope Fay can pull off an Academy Award winning performance when she tells momma she gonna ask Axe for a “date.”
