Luann is supposed to be teaching Fay about acting? Luann has no acting experience, outside of her role in a single high school musical. Luann was supposed to just be helping Pru with running the drama camp, not conducting the actual acting instruction. I realize that this whole “mentoring” scheme is just a contrivance to let the strip indulge in its comfort zone of middle-school romance, but the in-story justification for it seems to be nebulous at best.
Well to Fay’s credit, she’s clearly not focused much in physical appearance, since Axel is about as attractive as Clint Howard. It’s a nice change of pace from the shallowness usually shown by the girls in this strip, going for guys who are a pretty face with no discernible personality. And yes that includes Luann: If Tiffany is shallow for her choice in men, then Luann is too since she always goes for the exact same guys at the exact same time (in other words, without taking time to get to know their inner selves before becoming obsessed with them.) Though it would be interesting to hear the justifications for Luann getting a pass and Tiffany not.
Aw crap, not this again! {Sigh} Hopefully, this ends quickly. Maybe they’re trying to pump up Lu’s strip time… seeing that is is named after her and she hasn’t had much strip time of late. I guess this is the only way for them to do it. They already “covered” the Jock thing (in more ways than one)! :-)
Well, Luann got the lips right. Drawing lips is not always Greg’s strong suit. At certain angles, Tiffany’s lips look like a platypus. Nancy’s lips look like something you could whitewater raft in. All of which surprises me, as Greg is so good at conveying nuances of facial expression in the simplicity of a cartoon.
Fantastic!! I love that we are still on this arc. So many complain, whine really, about Luann not being like it was when she was in grade or high school, now that she is in college, so many more complain about her being here, her not being hired to give dating advice, her love life is so disastrous that how could she, complaining about Fay mooning over this horrible kid Axel, oh I could list so much whining. People are more likely to complain than to comment about what the story really is about. No wonder I am not a big fan of Rotten Tomatoes (lol). Anyway I think this is funny, perfectly appropriate, and one of the best new arc’s in the strip in a long time. Don’t worry Tiffany and Gunther lovers, or Leslie haters, or even TJ haters (and they are legion) you will get your chance by and by, meanwhile I am one that is loving this particular funny, sweet, and so typical for Luann’s whole basic theme of youth angst story. Fantastic!
I was hoping that this would be moving away from Luann’s and Fay’s “boyfriend troubles”. Unfortunately, my hopes have been dashed. I will say that Luann has done a good impression of Axel. I am disgruntled at Fay’s end comment, “Oooh, I’m nervous already!” While I can understand a youthful crush, I personally would find it much more enjoyable and interesting to have other aspects of Fay’s character be the focus of arcs with her. As it currently stands, she is really being somewhat of a “Quill” character. What I mean by this, is that from my perspective, Quill was primarily a reflective “surface” upon which we saw reflections of Luann’s ideas and perspectives. By and large, he was not much beyond that. It seems that Fay’s character is becoming much a similar “foil” to in this case, be a reflection of Luann’s thoughts about dating, and additionally to mirror much of the same “boy crazy” behavior Luann had as a part of her character when she was that age. But, that is the rub…. Luann was definitely “boy crazy” as us long-time readers know… but there was more to her character too. So, that made the “boy crazy” aspect just a PART of her whole character. I fear that all Fay is becoming will be the “Mini-Me” of Luann and worse, will ONLY be about the “boy crazy” aspects.
At this point, I would like to see Mrs. Garcia come in. Luann knows she should be talking more with Mrs. Garcia about this before this much boy talk proceeds. Luann knows better than this.
I once read that feeling bored is not caused by the presence of anything, but the absence of something – sufficient curiosity. Find something interesting about today’s strip, and share it. So you see – I am curious about the boredom being shared in the comments. I am curious why you need us to know about your bored feelings. But mostly I am curious how being a mentor makes one more mature.
The reactions to the current story line are fascinating, reflecting diverse interpretations and predictions based on the personal experiences of the readers with teenage girls. This analysis of Fay and the younger Luann parallels the research I am currently working on to describe the main character in a historical novel about Anne Burrus/Burrows who came to Jamestown VA in 1607 as one of two women among the 100 plus men. She was only 14, the same age as Fay, and four years older than Pocohantes. From the perspective of my heroine, Anne Burrus, Fay is at a stage of development where she is seeking to learn about being an adult woman and still drawn to the carefree role of childhood.
In my opinion the things Fay is learning from Luann would best be learned from her mother. Unfortunately, parenting skills are not taught, so kids grow up absorbing the culture of social media (tv, movies, Facebook, etc.) and important values and character development are left to chance. My ethics dictate that Luann should discuss the topic of dating and boys with Fay’s mom. I hope this does not become a problem. On the other hand, it is the problems, challenges, mistakes in judgements, and errors in decisions that create the drama that makes the story interesting.
It’s OK to be bored or to prefer other characters. We each bring different expectations, needs, and wishes to the table. I prefer not to read the whining complaints, so I just skip them. So many of the comments are insightful and entertaining, thought provoking and inspiring. I am grateful for all you philosophers and clever humorists.
I don’t know why Greg Evans had the cast graduate and go to college if he apparently had no idea what to do with Luann in college. He’s spent a lot more time on Bernice and Gunther’s college experiences. The only bit of Luann’s college experience that’s been show is art classes, and now Luann’s only plots revolve around teen romance. So why did the strip even need to move on?

Fay – firstn you need to find out more about his work ethic so you will know if he can support your acting effort.

Just in case Axel happens by, Luann should have a lemon in her hand with a bite missing out of it.

Or, tell him that this is “Vintage Car Appreciation Week”, and she is trying to imitate a 1958 Edsel Ranger.
