Heights apparently make Nancy’s face swell up, too. :D Hint to Olivia: There are plenty of examples in the corpus of Nancy being nauseous. Might wanna review ’em. Just saying. ;-)
This is one huge difference from Bushmiller. The classrooms were full of kids in those comics — uncountable as they faded into the back of the classroom. And Nancy and Sluggo were always sitting on the front row.
6 long-shot predictions on what some people might be upset about this week in the comment section:1) Nancy’s teacher is setting expectations for her classroom in May and not at the beginning of the traditional school year.2) Nancy’s teacher is wearing a white shirt… as Gilchrist and Bushmiller never would have done that.3) Sluggo’s desk looks uncomfortable, and no artist in her right mind would draw such a desk.4) Nancy’s teacher writes on the white board in numbers and letters too small, and how could the kids possibly read that?5) Nancy’s teacher is using a white board and not a chalkboard like they did in the 1950’s.6) Any form of technology beyond a pulley pulling a cartoon safe up by a rope is being used, so therefore will be dated and not timeless in the year 2049.
Senator Bloop is clearly rolling over in his grave.
One thing I am wondering about the last panel. My read is that Nancy is both expressing “nausea” and also “grumpiness”. I wonder if that was intentional by Olivia or if she had mostly meant just the “nausea” to be the expression? If I take it as just nausea, the comic seems funnier to me today than if I take it as both nausea and grumpiness.
For me, if the grumpiness is intentional, it seems to signify Nancy is just not into school and learning. Personally, I am not fond of Nancy being seemingly anti-scholastic, but it is potentially a real feeling she has. She is smart enough, though, that I would prefer to see her work to achieve scholastic goals.
So, for me, I am hoping Olivia means Nancy’s expression to be just nausea.
It’s funny to me that the grumpy geezers who have been complaining have actually given the story of Olivia taking over much more life than if they’d just moved on. So thanks to all of those Gilchrustians enjoying your golden years!
When did the Nancy cast move to Colorado? Is Nancy attending Ridgemont High? Is Nancy’s teacher named Mary Jane? Is the teacher related to Cheech or Chong? Inquiring minds want to know!!
Why are the walls that color? Where are the other students? Why doesn’t the desk have minute imperfections that tell the trained eye what sort of material it is composed of? How can a word have two meanings? Why isn’t there a door? Why isn’t this drawn by a man? Where’s Sluggo and Aunt Fritzi and Rollo? Where are the three rocks? Why don’t the colors have rich tonal blending from one hue to another? Why are people enjoying this? Why isn’t there a clock on the wall? Why aren’t there portraits of the US Presidents on the wall? Is this another technology joke? Why isn’t this about dead pop stars? Why isn’t country music playing? Why isn’t the teacher drawn to suit my sexual fantasies? Why doesn’t this cartoonist read my comments and draw the strip to my stated specifications? Why are the words between the panels sideways? Why are there little letters and numbers in the bottom of one panel that don’t add to my enjoyment of the strip? Why aren’t there space pirates in this strip? Why doesn’t anybody ‘like’ my insightful comments? Why did Mommy leave me?
Isn’t it a little weird that Nancy’s hair casts a big shadow, yet the desk (which appears to be levitating) doesn’t? I guess I just don’t understand the modern, up-to-date comic strip art. Or maybe I just need a Snapchat filter.

What sells this is how she really does look so nauseated that she’s about to puke.

Fear of heights, or fear of falling (i.e., failing)?
katina.cooper over 6 years ago
Nancy won’t have to fear about heights when she goes downstairs to the principals office.

What a profile that teacher has. Does anyone in this strip get a decent nose?

Since Nancy and Sluggo appear to be the only kids in the class, she should do relatively well.

An ad says that Ernie Bushmiller recommends this. How? He died in 1982?

I really think it gets worse every day. Whoever is drawing this strip should retire.

Regarding Bushmiller style, would he have bolded the word that sets up the punchline? Is this where the traditional/modern line is drawn?
Beyond that, have we gotten the teacher’s name yet? I’m not getting a vibe from her as to whether she’ll be the teacher character going forward.
