Well, the Tour de France gets a lot coverage every year and I know some guys buy racing bikes because “the stars on the Tour de France had them”. But the rest mostly gets coverage during the Olympics.
During the Tonya and Nancy incident, figure skating became a highly watched to the general public – every competition, even Europeans, was televised! Not so anymore. >sigh<
A lot of people with loads of innate talent never get anywhere because they are too lazy. Often the problem is that they got by on the innate talent when they were young and didn’t realize that effort would be required to keep up with the very best. There are also those who had only modest talent who became great by working at it. So I vote for #2
Nobody hits the top without all three (reading the third as a metaphor). No amount of work and dedication would have made Mozart a composer if he had never heard of music, and though there are a lot of things a snail can be good at, no amount of environment will allow him to do the high jump at all. Unless you allow him to cheat a bit — humans can fly, and they can “swim” across the oceans.

You could plug in music or acting or any of a hundred activities, and ask the same questions.

The best athletes (or musicians or actors) excel at all three.

Exactly, the Olympics every 4 years. The running and the swimming.

Very little of 3 or we would all be using drugs and such.

You have to have talent for it in the first place. Otherwise, it’s too frustrating for you to want to put in all the work.

How much is heart and persistence? How much is wanting to get paid gigantic amounts of dollars?

Talent really means that you loved doing something so much that you kept doing it when you were bad at it and eventually you achieved mastery.

Speaking of coverage every 4 years, the first round of the World Cup is underway. Anyone notice? Anyone? Hello?

Adapting someone else’s technique is useless without the knowledge of when to apply it, and without practicing it.
