    Perhaps they thought he was Dylan Thomas.

    So a Welsh is a Scot?

    Cheer up, Mr, Welsh, the Swedish Academy is just warming up for the presentation to ABBA…

    And then maybe Björk?

    How did this Welch guy know my prostate is rancid? I don’t remember him tasting it. As for being a hippie, I’m not old enough.

    I didn’t realize that song lyrics were considered literature. When, if ever, will comics be considered literature?

    Dylan’s Nobel is pretty much right in line with previous awards. They’ve always been more about social-political statements than about quality writing. I mean, come on! Saul Bellow? Naguib Mahfouz? Really?

    Mr Welsh needs to listen to some Dylan. Particularly the one about how everybody must get stoned.

    Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind

    Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind

    An’ the poet and the painter far behind his rightful time

    An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

    .

    Since Scottish things/people have been mentioned, if I ever get together with a bunch of rancid hippies and form a street gang, I’d call it “aft a-gley.”

    " And death shall have no dominion

    .Dead man naked they shall be one

    With the man in the wind and the west moon;

    <When their bones are picked clean

    and the clean bones gone,

    They shall have stars at elbow and foot;

    Though they go mad they shall be sane,

    Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again;

    Though lovers be lost love shall not;

    And death shall have no dominion…."

    .

    And Death Shall Have No Dominion

    – Poem by Dylan Thomas

    False premise. Bob Dylan is not the first songwriter to win the Noble prize in literature. That honor belongs to the poet and songwriter Rabindranath Tagore, who was honored in 1913. He wrote the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh, as well as over a hundred other songs, many of which are still sung and recorded today. Fair is fair, he won the Nobel for a book of poetry (which he originally published in Bengali and then translated into English himself), and not for his songwriting, so maybe I’m splitting hairs, but I’m really tired of that falsehood about Bob Dylan’s being “the first.”

    The quote ranks right up there with “colonized by a nation of wankers.” Welsh is more than all right in my book.

    Actually, they were Swedish hippies. But I suppose that’s kinda the same thing.

    The real point is not Dylan at all, but that there are so many worthy potential candidates not considered at all. Seems like catering to PopCult. And I’m not a cultist (unless you consider following Frog Applause a “cult.” Would that make Sister Teresa a Cult Leader? Would that be a Bad Thing?)….
